CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

COR

Tea with Byron wasn’t the worst thing in the world, but it had been up there. The food was good, and the tea was heavenly, I would give him that, but I spent most of the time wondering if he was going to poison me. I watched as he picked stuff off the plate, but it was clear the food hadn’t been laced. I wouldn’t let my guard down, however. That was probably what he wanted. And then he would try something, just like he always did.

Byron talked about what life was like before he betrayed me. He reminded me all that he taught me and how many hours he had spent as my tutor. With each memory he brought up, it felt like I was reliving the tragedy over and over again. It reminded me of the life I wanted to provide for Ellie—it reminded me of the life that we lost because this asshole wanted to destroy everyone I cared about. He had led me to believe that he cared, only to destroy everything in the end.

I wanted more than anything to watch him suffer.

After we finished eating, I had noticed that I nearly destroyed the cloth napkin that I was given as I had wrung it in my hands each time he spoke. I didn’t feel bad, as they could easily replace it. He had the money. I could have made a scene and thrown things against the wall and whatnot, but I also didn’t want to receive any punishment that he or the guards might give me. No, I would play nicely until I figured a way out of there.

Because it wasn’t as if anyone would come and get me.

Byron had made that perfectly clear. He told me that he sent men into the woods to look for Ellie and the others, but they were long gone by the time they started the search. They could be anywhere on Mu. They had mentioned they were going to head for the mountains, and that was probably what they had done. There was no way they didn't leave me behind—they would be too stupid to risk their lives to save me. No, we knew going into this that not all of us would get out of it alive. I deserved to be the one killed by Byron after what I had done.

There was no way they could save me from this place either. There were too many guards—it would be impossible. Although we had been in quite a few impossible scenarios in the past week, this would be too much even for Ellie. She wouldn't be that stupid to risk it all for me. Maybe at one time, but not after I betrayed her.

I didn't deserve them coming for me.

It was why I didn't ask for their help after Kaus was destroyed. I didn't deserve it—I deserved to be alone. I had to fix it all out on my own.

Or, perhaps, I was afraid of her choosing to turn her back on me.
