HAM RUMMAGED THROUGH the cottage. Lamech would not be coming back, so he wouldn’t miss any of the things Ham needed. He found a cache of Demarian coins, silver and a few gold pieces. Though he wasn’t sure if this currency would be accepted in the city, he did know that the metal itself held value. He found a short sword, its blade the length of his forearm. The scabbard was worn strapped across the back, so that the weapon could be concealed under clothing. He got the blade in place over his tunic, then rummaged around until he found a cloak and put it on. What else might he need? He took a bag of food, dried dates and raisin cakes, two skins of water. It was enough. He needed to go before he changed his mind.

At the stables he roused his steed, a young roan gelding. He took down his tack, readied the horse, and swung himself up. His way lit by a quarter-moon and a sky full of stars, Ham turned the horse southward.

If I don’t have a future here, then I’ll make one in Dorshan. Sera can have Japheth. I can find a life of my own. And someone to share it with.

He did not look back.
