Chapter 19
A red-haired boy in his late teens brought Rena a bowl of clear chicken broth and a silver carafe of coffee. He stayed with her while she ate, standing unobtrusively in a corner of the room and stepping forward now and again to refill the cup at her elbow. Rena decided she could get used to this.
The third time the boy, whose name was Troy, bowed to her before refilling her cup, Rena asked him why. âI mean,â she said, smiling to show that she wasnât offended. âIt isnât as if Iâm one of the Gentry. Iâm as human as you are.â
The tips of Troyâs overly large ears turned pink. He was kind of cute in an overgrown-puppy sort of way, Rena thought. âI know, miss,â he said, staring at the tops of his shiny black shoes. âBut youâre Lord Malachiâs personal servant. The law says a lordâs servant is his proxy and must be treated as such in his absence.â
âIt does?â Rena was bemused. Sheâd never really read up on the finer points of the Human Commerce Agreement. Once the slaves left her and Maggieâs booth, her involvement with them ended.
âDo you treat Malachi like this when heâs here?â
âOh no, miss. His lordshipâs made it clear weâre not to attend him.â Troy lowered his voice. âThis was years before my time, but I heard his exact words were, âIf I catch sight of another sniveling human anywhere near me, Iâll break his neck.ââ
Rena raised her eyebrows. âSounds serious.â
Troy nodded impressively. âHe means it, miss. We all stay in the kitchen when heâs here, at least until he and Lord Caleb go downstairs. But youâre different.â
There was a wistful look on his acne-scarred face. Rena felt uncomfortable. âTroy, you havenât been bitten, have you?â
Troy looked down, fumbling for her cup. Rena took the carafe from him and set it aside. âAnswer me, please. Itâs all right. Itâs nothing to be ashamed of.â
âOf course I have,â Troy said, still addressing his shoes. He touched the side of his neck. âBut it was just the one time, you know, when Lord Caleb hired me. Itâs not like you or Aakif.â
âIâm not like Aakif,â Rena said, more sharply than sheâd intended.
âYes, miss,â Troy said. Rena could tell he didnât believe her.
She sighed. âYou seem like an intelligent guy. Why donât you get work elsewhere? Why stay with the Gentry?â
Troy looked up. His eyes were cornflower-blue, round with astonishment. âI couldnât do that, miss.â
âWhy not? Youâre a free reg, arenât you? You could get a permit and go anywhere.â
âI could, miss. But the Gentry, you know? Thereâs nothing else like them.â
âYou know what they do. What they are. They might kill you.â
âOh no, miss. Lord Caleb wouldnât do that. Andâ¦â
âWhat?â
âWell, itâs not like you or Aakif,â Troy said again. âBut thereâs always the chance, you know? Lord Calebâs inauguration is in a couple of months. Thereâs a chance, if I get assigned to serve at the ballâ¦â His face flushed brick red as he finished in a whisper.
