CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR
Tyler didn’t want to waste a single moment of alone time he had with Jeremy, as he knew Ben or Colin could return any second.
“What about Earl? Did you fill him in on our plans?” Tyler asked.
“That was one of the first things I did, like you asked,” Jeremy said. “But he didn’t seem nearly as excited as I expected. In fact, he seemed nervous. The second I mentioned your name, he started looking around like others were spying on us. I didn’t come away with the impression he was interested.”
“Don’t worry, that’s just Earl being Earl,” Tyler assured him. “In the end, I know he’ll follow whatever I tell him. He’s oddly loyal like that, maybe to a fault – at least to his own fault.”
“I’m sorry if your only other ally didn’t inspire much confidence in me,” Jeremy said.
“I’m telling you, if this is going to work, you have to continue trusting me. You’ll thank me one day when there’s only a few of us on board and we’re sailing around the Caribbean,” Ainsworth said.
“I think it’ll be you thanking me and BJ,” Jeremy said, reminding Tyler who held the power in this relationship.
“You’re right,” Tyler said, showing he was more than capable of acceding control. “Speaking of BJ, how is that part of the operation proceeding? I haven’t seen him during the time Ben has let up here. Have you been finding reasons to get him time on the computers?”
“No, but he’s sure he’ll be able to manipulate the systems without much trouble,” the young man said. “He doesn’t think it’ll be as hard as you expected. BJ thinks there’s a failure command already built into each system. According to him, he can cause all computer systems to go into lockdown mode while simulating complete computer failure without anything bad actually happening. He says the monitors will read that they’re sinking and the slightest tweak in the ballast tanks can make the seacraft seem like it’s listing.”
“That should be more than enough to convince everyone to get off,” Ainsworth said, feeling proud that the young men he recruited were working out so well. “But he’s sure it won’t be difficult to do? He won’t need a lot of time with the computer to figure it out? He won’t have more than one chance to get this done; we’ll be working on a tight timeframe.”
“I’ll try to get BJ here at least once before the day of evacuation but he feels confident he can do what he says without problem,” Jeremy said, though he didn’t appear as happy as Tyler expected. He quickly found out why. “But that’s only if he decides to go through with it.”
“If?”
“Like your friend Earl, BJ seems to be wavering too,” Jeremy said. “He doesn’t trust you, not one bit. He thinks that regardless of what we do to help, you’re going to stab us in the back sooner or later.”
For the first time in his life, Ainsworth fully intended on doing what was best for a group rather than only himself.
