“MARIE, WHAT HAPPENED?” He looked at me, standing at his door. I gawped him, wearing his pajamas, topless. I didn't utter a word.

“Marie, come inside.” Blair covered me with a large brown robe as he escorted me inside. I remained silent.

He glided his finger down my cheek. He looked at the bruises. “What happened?”

I kept looking into his eyes without answering, my cold wet lips trembling.

“Jeff did this, right?”

I nodded. His countenance changed instantly; creases formed over his brows. He appeared quite alarmed, concerned, and livid at the same time. His neck muscles hardened.

“Marie, you don't deserve this; let's get you cleaned up.” He lifted me and carried me to his well-adorned vanity room. I smiled a bit, through my bitter-sweet tears. At least someone cares.

“Marie, you are the best thing that has happened to me. I don't want to see you hurt again, never, Marie.” He had the gauze, gently, wiping my wounds.

“Ouch, that hurts.”

“I'm so sorry, love.”
