Research in the field of psychology tells us that about half of all children are raised in an environment that teaches them secure attachment; these children get reliable love, support and attention from their caretakers, and as they grow, they are able to become independent, self-assured, reliable and trusting. Unfortunately, the other half of children are raised in environments that don’t get it quite right. Children whose parents were not reliably supportive can develop an anxious attachment style, never able to trust that they can count on a partner, or that they are loved. Children whose parents were absent may grow up to use avoidant attachment as a coping skill, refusing to rely on others and developing a fear of physical or emotional closeness. Finally, some extremely unlucky children are raised in environments where they are simply exposed to too much abuse and trauma; these children will likely enact disorganized attachment behaviors in adulthood, which creates chaos and distrust in relationships.
