Chapter Nine

The following morning, Reid surveyed Parker’s bedroom. He’d made the bed with clean sheets, vacuumed and even wiped off the light film of dust that had accumulated on the maple dresser and the nightstands. All of his belongings were packed and ready to go, and so far as he could tell, he hadn’t forgotten anything. The room was ready for its new occupant.

And, after talking with the girls over breakfast—which had proved challenging food-wise, since Megan had declared today the color pink day—he believed they were also ready. Or, he corrected, as ready as they could be. A few questions were asked, a few sad looks were given, but Erin and Megan understood that Reid was not vacating their lives. He’d still see them every day. If they needed him, he was a phone call and a short drive away.

Sighing, he grabbed his two bags and went downstairs. He wanted to stop by his house and unpack, settle in a bit and—if he could fit in a shopping trip—hit the grocery store before his shift on the mountain that afternoon.

He deposited his luggage by the front door and turned toward the living room. Despite his belief that moving out of the Lennox household was the right step to take, he felt strangely lost and...deflated by the prospect. Waking up tomorrow morning without the chatter or exuberance of two little girls as his alarm clock would seem empty.

And lonely as hell.

Before he could sink too far into his gloomy thoughts, Jinx roared around the corner of the archway. Seeing Reid, she slammed on the brakes and slid to a skidding halt, just short of impact. She gurgled a yelp of surprise, but...that was it. No growling. No ankle tugging.

“Hey, girl,” Reid said, hoping the peace they’d found in the kitchen hadn’t evaporated. “Where were you headed off to in such an almighty rush?”

Her tail swished along the floor. And while she watched him with interest, there didn’t seem to be the same level of wariness in her gaze. Good signs.

“See?” Reid said, petting the dog. “I’m the same guy today I was last night. Still your friend. Still won’t let you down. Promise.” Jinx snorted one of her canine replies and pushed her head upward, against Reid’s hand. “You like that, huh?”

“Oh, she isn’t picky. Any sort of affection makes her happy,” Daisy said, walking into the entryway from the living room. Stopping, she crossed her arms over the navy-blue-and-gray sweatshirt she wore, eyeing Reid and Jinx with curiosity. “How’d you pull this off, anyway?”

“Patience.” Standing straight, he grinned. “Perhaps a touch of that obstinate nature you continually accuse me of having. We also,” he said, nodding toward Jinx, “had quite the conversation. She told me a story you wouldn’t believe.”

Daisy’s lips quirked at the corners, and humor—as bright as the sun—glimmered in her eyes, over her expression. “Is that so? Which story did Jinx...ah...share with you?”

“If I told you, I’d be breaking a confidence. Sorry, can’t do that.
