MY HEART HURT AS I held the princess. She wasn’t supposed to be in this much pain. I tensed as I held her close to myself. I looked up helplessly at Jasper and Jill, who were both staring at me with stone faces. I was on my own here. This was their princess, of course. They were her guards. They were allowing me to try to comfort her, though, and I didn’t want to completely fuck it up.

“When I was a kid,” I whispered, “nobody ever told me how hard it was to be a grownup.”

“Really?” Asherah sniffled. “Because that’s all anyone ever said to me.”

“Not me,” I told her. It was the truth. “My dad said that it was a lot of fun. You got to go on adventures, you got to explore, and most of all, you got to see the stars up close if you wanted to.”

“You can’t get too close to stars,” she sniffled. “You’ll die.”

“My dad was a dreamer,” I whispered.

“And your mom?”

“She married a dreamer,” I chuckled. “She was a little more grounded, but together, the two of them did anything their hearts could dream up. Sometimes they went to far-away places. Occasionally, they got themselves into trouble.”

“They sound nice,” she sniffled against me. I pushed her back just a little so I could kneel down in front of her. This enabled us to see a little more eye-to-eye, although the position wasn’t perfect and now that I was on my knees, I was looking up to her a little bit.

“They were lovely, and they loved each other.”

She looked at me for a minute, and then she placed her hands on either side of my face. The princess stared at me like nothing else mattered, like this was the most important thing she was going to do today. She licked her lips, and for a moment, I thought she might kiss me right there in front of Jill and Jasper.

The guards seemed to sense what was about to happen because Jill nudged her brother and the two of them muttered something I couldn’t understand before disappearing into the next room. Luckily, this particular boat had a couple of rooms below deck. We’d be absolutely fine to stay here until the storm passed, and it wasn’t going to be terrible being locked up with someone like Asherah.

“You’re lucky,” she told me. “My parents never wanted each other.”

“Relationships can be hard,” I pointed out the obvious. Even though I’d lost Zara tragically, there had been moments where our relationship struggled. Her death wasn’t enough to erase that pain or that reality. Even though I missed my wife, I also knew that I’d made mistakes in our relationship. She had, too. I was certain that Asherah and her late husband had screwed up sometimes, as well. As long as they learned from those mistakes, it was fine to mess up.

“I know,” she whispered. “This doesn’t feel hard, though.”

“What doesn’t feel hard?”

“This thing between us.” She was still holding my face, still whispering.
