THINGS PROGRESS QUICKLY once we reach the house. Danny and Tate are ready to go, backpacks on and sitting on the porch steps with our bags beside them. He and I quickly check the map and reroute us to the quickest exit out of town.

“Alright, Danny let me help you get Tate in the pack. Tate, you have your pepper spray?” Tate holds up her pink vial and allows us to situate her facing Danny. Maggie has her map out and giving the house one final look, we head out.

Two hours later, we take a break at Lenny’s Salvage Yard. Climbing through the fence, Maggie snags her shirt on the ragged metal when we hear the motorcycles again. Danny pops Tate back in the carrier while I wrestle with the fence link and her shirt. A motorcycle enters my peripheral vision and I know we’ve been seen.

“Run, Danny! Try to find a way out the back fence.” In desperation, I rip the bottom of Maggie’s shirt and yank her into the yard. We sprint towards the back fence, blood dripping off a long scratch on Maggie’s back. There’s a two lane highway beyond the chain link fence in front of us. We have to cross it before we can get to the woods. At least twenty feet of wide open space with nowhere to hide.

“They’ve parked up front.” A panicked whisper comes from Maggie at the same time Tate starts projecting thoughts into our minds.

“They’re coming! They’re coming! We need to hide.”

Danny jumps halfway up the back fence, frantically climbing upward. Tate’s brown and purple curls are the only thing visible as he straddles the top and looks back. Not wasting the breath to talk to him, I wave them on, hoping Tate catches my thoughts that we’ll meet them by the old rest stop a mile away - to stay hidden.

Two hours and we are too separated for my liking. This isn’t safe and I’m desperately trying to think of an alternate plan. Multiple footsteps jog through the salvage yard, Tate is still crying in my head and I’m catching ‘I wanna be sedated’ from Maggie.

Almost at the fence.
