BURGUNDY
At least the grapes (or, rather, grape) is simple in Burgundy, because nothing else is – Pinot Noir is basically it for reds. Unthinkable 20 years ago, Pinot now makes gluggable – and sometimes glorious – wine the world over, but the Côte d’Or isn’t called ‘Golden’ for nothing. (It’s not a name you’ll ever see on a label, though; it just refers jointly to the two best, most central areas, the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune.)
Even the names of Burgundy’s great wine villages have a rich and silky mouth-feel to them, and bottles with labels that proudly show the name of any of these places are always expensive… although not in comparison to those that show the names of the tiny, hallowed individual vineyards of the premiers and grands crus within them such as Le Musigny, Chambertin, Corton and La Romanée-Conti, which are among the most expensive in the world.
The second-tier villages of the Côte d’Or have upped their game greatly in recent years and names like Savigny-lès-Beaune, St-Aubin, Pernand-Vergelesses, Santenay, Fixin, Monthélie, Marsannay, Auxey-Duresses and Saint-Romain give a glimpse of the glory – and they don’t sound too shabby either, do they?
Indeed, standards throughout the region have improved so much that a peek through the window can sometimes be had from the wines labelled Côte or Hautes-Côtes de Nuits or Beaune and especially Côte de Nuits-Villages, which can be made from a blend of wines from strictly defined areas. Plain Bourgogne Rouge is more of a gamble, but some of the top producers and blenders (negoçiants) make good things from carefully selected wines.
