What was that? For a moment, among the dazzling hum of the bamboo shoots and the grassy paradise at the center of the canyon, there was something else. Briefly when face to face with Milo, I wanted to kiss him. Then the wind came through sweeping it away, tossing it about, and sending it through the bamboo shoots just as we reached the edge of the canyon. The sound, so beautiful, I knew it would ring in my ears long after the yellow mountains faded into the horizon behind us. I was sad to say goodbye to the mountains, but was sure that their colorful peaks would provide nourishment to the coming sunset as they got swallowed by it.

Milo, my enemy. Milo, my teammate. Milo, my… I paused. I wouldn’t even allow the thought to cross my mind. Focus! If I couldn’t help the professor remember, there would be no way home. Nothing else mattered. Not even Milo.

“How close are we to the Red Ribbon Tree?” I asked as the distance between us and the mountains grew.

“Very,” the professor said, digging through his bag. He pulled out three floor-length cloaks.

“Cool!” Milo shouted, grabbing the cloak, tying it around his neck, and pretending to fly. “Capes are awesome.” He jumped around, shooting invisible fire balls from his hands.

I began, “Isn’t it too hot to wear—” A cold breeze shot through the warm Involutian air. I pulled the cloak over my shoulders.

As we continued walking, the cold air violently descended upon us. The suddenness and the brutality of weather reminded me of home and I was oddly comforted by it.

“Look out!” Milo yelled, pushing me out of the path of something falling from overhead.

We stared in awe as it fell at an impossibly slow speed. The object was about the size of a Frisbee. As it got closer it looked familiar.

Milo recognized it first. “Is that a—”

“Snowflake,” I finished. The elegant crystalline sculpture floated down as if was being lowered from the sky on a string.

“It’s huge,” Milo said as it passed eye level and hit the ground like a pile of soft snow.

“Impossible,” I said, eying the lump of snow.

“Really? And the dragon was commonplace?” Milo said as he picked up a handful, examining it closely.

“Yes. Like the bamboo canyon, this forest is one of Involutia’s marvels, but, we must continue,” the professor said. The professor’s nervous ramblings increased as we neared the fabled Red Ribbon Tree.

One snowflake became a thousand. The flakes were so big that I dodged them. I weaved around until the storm became too dense to avoid them. Like a snow globe, it held all the magic of winter yet was so sudden, as if someone shook up our world, disturbing the snowy scene from its settled state. Something hard hit the back of my head. Too much force for one of the giant snowflakes. I made a quick snowball to fire back on Milo. Before I managed to stand back up he hit me with another one.
