The journey took her almost forty-five minutes, during which time she stared blankly out of the window at nothing as the train hurtled through the unlit tunnels deep underground. She knew, and guessed that most of the passengers didn’t, that these trains went outside of the shielded areas. Even so far underground they were still vulnerable to the lack of atmosphere, so the leading compartment on every one of the trains was huge as it contained a shield array capable of shrouding the entire length of it. They were the same shield emitters as on the ships that escorted the heavy troop transports, but these shields were configured for length and not to encompass an attacking unit to keep them safe for landing.

Had she not been paying attention, she would have missed the part where the train reached the end of an incline so long and gentle that she didn’t notice it. The blackness seen through the window gave way to a dull gray of a predawn, an artificial one but one all the same, and the train began to decelerate rapidly to push her back into the seat. The scrolling display running lengthways along the carriage showed the approach to Callan Station, so she readied herself to stand and pick up her bag.

She got off, again with the crowds steering clear of her, despite the fact that she was unarmed, and walked off the platform back to the main station.

Named after one of the former Presidents who had either donated money or had somehow been a big supporter of Lunar expansion, the station wasn’t big by any real stretch of the imagination. It was maybe a quarter of the size of the main arrivals train platforms. She glanced around, seeing the departures board displayed high up on one plain wall, and checked it. Finding the train to the Lunar Penal facility, she checked the departure time against the time display on her forearm screen which had automatically switched to a dual display to show the time back at her Earth departure point. Seeing that she had almost half an hour to kill, she went in search of the thing she liked most.

Coffee.

A vendor tried to get her to take a Danish to go with the frothy cup of caffeine-infused sugar and succeeded with surprising ease. She sat on a low wall, knowing that the flimsy bistro chairs wouldn’t support the weight of her suit, and sipped the coffee in between taking bites of the pastry. Both were good, which surprised her, and when she had finished, she found her eyes casting around at the new and unfamiliar environment.
