Chapter Fifteen

JAMES

“My grandmother didn’t scare you off?” I follow Zara into her house. We spend more time here than we do at my apartment, but this feels like home. I know we won’t be able to stay here once the engagement is official, but damn, if I don’t love the feeling of being in her space.

“Apparently she was disappointed we don’t have better stories for her.” She shakes her head as she sinks down onto her sofa. I sit, pulling her feet into my lap.

“Better stories?” I take off her heels and dig my fingers into her soles of her feet.

“Oh God, that feels amazing.” Her groan goes straight to my dick. As much as I’d love to take her right here, right now, I’m buttering her up.

“You didn’t answer my question.”

Zara drops her head back onto the couch. “She said that she and the King used to get into all sorts of trouble, but we never heard about it because it was never in the press.”

“Goes to show you how times have changed. Also, let’s not talk about that.”

“You mean your grandmum and granddad doing dirty things to one another?” Her head pops up on a laugh. “If you ever want to know good spots for doing dirty things in palaces around the world, Minerva knows.”

I cringe, pulling Zara closer to me. “Never say those words again. No one wants to know about that.”

“She’s your grandmum!” she says on a laugh, snuggling closer to me.

I wrap my arms around her, tilting my head to whisper in her ear, “Play for me, Z.”

She pulls back, a blush crawling up her beautiful face. “Now?”

“No, in ten years.” I roll my eyes. “Yes, now. I’ve never heard you play before.”

“But my violin is in pieces.” She looks down, toying with the hem of my jumper.

“I know you have another.” I lift her chin up, forcing her eyes to meet mine. “Why don’t you want to play for me?”

“Because I’m nervous. What if you don’t like how I sound?”

I drop my forehead to hers. Christ, this woman is doing me in. “Zara, love. I will love anything you play for me. I just want to hear you play.”

“You promise?” Her breath ghosts over my lips, and it almost distracts me from the issue at hand. Almost.

“Yes. Now, play for me. I don’t care what.”

Her lips capture mine. They taste like her drink from lunch earlier. When her tongue glides along the seam of my lips, I open for her. There’s nothing I wouldn’t give this woman. But just as fast as she kisses me, she pulls away.

She leaves the living room before coming back with her violin.

“Just don’t be disappointed if it doesn’t sound amazing. I haven’t played with Henrietta in quite some time.”

I nearly choke on a laugh. “You name your instruments?”

“Duh.” She gives me an incredulous look before tuning it. I relax back into the couch, waiting until she takes a deep breath and settles the violin under her chin. Zara’s eyes flip to mine, and I give her an encouraging nod before the first notes hit me.
