Mikaeus

Seeing Autumn walk in the door eases the tension inside my entire body. Thank the gods she’s safe.

But I still want to thrash her soundly for her deception because from what I can tell, she’s not ill whatsoever.

Autumn along with her roommate stare at me as if I’m on fire, but Elena recovers quickly. Which doesn’t surprise me. I’ve seen her execute attack combinations that tell me more about her than she’ll ever know.

“What are you doing here?” Elena asks me, folding her arms. “Is this even allowed?”

Meanwhile, Autumn’s mouth is still hanging open.

I contemplate whether to answer Elena, since my issue is with Autumn and not her, but from the way she’s sizing me up, Elena is not leaving her friend alone with me. Or at least not without Autumn’s permission.

That’s going to present a challenge, but it’s nothing I can’t handle.

“I wish to have a word with Spencer,” I say, nodding my chin at Autumn. She pales after hearing her name, and I can’t help but sense that something is not quite right. Fear all but exudes from her, starting with the way she stands as though she’s ready to bolt. Then there’s the fact that her pupils are dilated. Perhaps she is ill.

Or feels guilty about something.

Elena nudges Autumn with her elbow, and that seems to bring her out of whatever daze she’s in. After blinking several times, she shares a look with Elena, and then Autumn finally brings her gaze to mine.

“Okay,” she says, her tone resigned.

Elena flicks her stormy eyes to me and then back to Autumn. “Are you sure, girl?”

The subliminal dismissal from the cadet irritates me just as much as I admire Elena for watching over Autumn. But that is my responsibility.

Or at least it’s something that I’ve taken on without stopping to fully examine why. And I refuse to do so now.

“Yeah,” Autumn says. “I’ll be right back.” She turns to look at me and then tilts her head toward the door. “Let’s go.”

Elena eyes me as I stride across the room and take up a position just outside the suite. “I’ll be here waiting,” she says, not bothering to hide the distrust in her voice.

Autumn grimaces, but Elena doesn’t see it because she’s too busy holding my gaze. I give her a nod to let her know the message has been received: if I hurt Autumn, she’s coming for me.

Then I promptly shut the door in her face by placing my hand on the security panel. Elena may be a skilled female, but I do not fear her by any means. The only reason I’m tolerating her thinly veiled warning is because it’s on Autumn’s behalf. If it weren’t, Elena would find herself in a precarious situation, since I do not take kindly to threats.

I brush all thoughts of Elena to the side as Autumn leans heavily against the wall, looking more petite than usual. She slides her gaze to mine and sighs.

“You wanted to see me, Lt. Mikaeus?”

“Where were you?”

My words are gruffer than I intend as my anger from before comes roaring back.
