“Did he really?”
Becky could only laugh with delight. She so loved having Jessica back in town after the fourteen years she’d been living in Chicago.
“He did. Right over there,” Becky pointed at the copper cooking kettle. “I never knew how wonderful it was to make a man lose all control because he’s so desperate to have you.”
Jessica’s smile was huge in turn, “Isn’t it though.”
They worked their way through a pair of the Judge’s smoked salmon omelets as they sat side by side on the couch.
She remembered the first time Harry had sat there while they ate burgers from the Plover. The sweetness of that kiss, so warm, soft, and gentle. And no matter how hard she’d worked her hands and body—which her knee was really complaining about despite wearing the full brace all morning—she hadn’t been able to block the thoughts about Harry and how soon he’d be gone from her life. And—
Before she knew what was happening, Jessica had set their to-go containers on the small table then slid close to wrap her arms around Becky.
Becky buried her face in her best friend’s shoulder.
“He’s never going to stay here. And he knows that it would be like ripping out a piece of my heart to ask me to leave.”
“I know. You so belong here.”
“It doesn’t help to have that confirmed. I swore I wasn’t going to cry over him.” Which was a completely pointless statement as she was now weeping and couldn’t seem to stop it.
She could feel Jessica’s nod, “I said the same thing.”
“It doesn’t work,” she barely managed to choke out, “does it?”
“Nope,” and Jessica ran a soothing hand up and down Becky’s back.
She’d thought that barfing her guts out at Harry’s feet had been the worst, but this pain was unending and there was no solution except to give up everything she loved. “And that’s if he even wants me,” it came out as a sob and more tears.
Jessica pushed her back until they were face to face, “If he doesn’t realize that you’re the most incredible woman on the planet—”
“Besides you!” Jessica always looked so slender and perfect.
“Well, of course me,” Jessica’s smile was warm and teasing. “If he doesn’t realize that you’re the second most incredible woman on the planet—”
“And Natalya!” Jessica’s cousin was the darkly seductive version of the blond beauty currently holding her.
“Becky!” Jessica gave her a shake. “You are beautiful and incredible and have done amazing things. If Harry doesn’t know that you’re the best thing he’s ever going to find, then he’s an idiot. And if you don’t get that about yourself…well, you’re hopeless! You scare Natya and me all the time.”
“I do?” Becky liked the sound of that though she couldn’t imagine how it was possible.
“Duh! Look at this!” Jessica waved a hand at the brewery. “You did this. I managed to create a failed journalism career and I’m now trying not to weep with terror as I scrape through my startup year as the town’s marketing manager. An effort, I’ll remind you, that is partly funded by Becky Billings BlueBird Brewery.
