CHAPTER 13

The rain continued to pour down. Glancing over at Jessica, he frowned. She was drenched and by the look on her face, not very happy about it. He suggested the ride after their morning meeting to pass the time before their car arrived to them to the airport in Albany. He hoped it would lighten her mood, which bordered on irate all morning. And it seemed to work for a moment. But then the damn rain.

“Sorry about the rain,” he yelled back at her.

“You can’t control the weather. It’s fine.”

“The smell of wet horse isn’t something that is very attractive.”

Jessica laughed and pulled up beside him. The tightness that overtook him when the rain started eased a bit with the sound of her laugh.

“It’s not that much farther.”

“Someone’s coming.” He nodded to the trail ahead of them. Two men on horseback rounded the corner. They waved and pulled up beside them.

“We came to get everyone off the trail. We’re expecting some flooding if the rain continues to come down this hard.”

“We were headed back.”

“Ma’am, you look like you need some protection from this weather. Would you like my jacket?”

Luca frowned as the man shrugged off his coat. Not because he was offering Jessica coverage, but because the man’s eyes were glued to her chest, which had become quite visible through the wet, white t-shirt.

“Oh no, thank you. I’m fine.” Jessica covered her chest with her hand with a frown. Her eyes met his and he saw the irritation.

“That is a very nice offer. Take the jacket, Jessica. We will leave it at the stables.”

Jessica’s gaze bounced between the men before she reached out and took the jacket. Luca’s lips pulled to the side. He didn’t realize how wretched it would feel seeing her wear another man’s jacket and he cursed himself for not planning ahead.

“Let’s continue on,” he said to Jessica before thanking the men for their help.

The remainder of the ride to the stables was short and quick. They turned in their horses and hurried back to their room.

“Well, so much for packing for the airport. I’m going to take a quick shower.”

Oh, how he wanted to offer to join her. To take her in his arms, carry her into the shower and love her like he wanted. The words sat in his mouth, ready to come out. He pressed his lips together, trying to hold them in and lost the battle. “Would you like company?”

She stopped. “Are you kidding me?”

“No.”

“The answer is no.”

He ached to hold her again. To feel her against him. To erase the negative mood away. “Say yes.” The words were raw.

Her gaze met his. What was she thinking? Silence stretched between them. She’d become what he needed to survive. Something he wanted regardless of the consequences.

“If we do this, then we commit to doing this. No more, yes we can then no we can’t.”

He nodded, taking a step toward her. He wanted nothing more than to scoop her in his arms, carry her to the bed and ravish her.
