Chapter 10: Day 5

Garret comes back into the lab a little while later.

“What’s the news, Dr. Probak?”

“It’s not good, Garret. Both Sam and Jill are infected with variants of the zombie virus.”

Fuck, I AM infected.

“You said variants. What do you mean by that?”

“Neither of them is infected with the standard zombie virus. I’m not sure what they’re infected with. I do know what Jill has is different from Sam. Sam seems mostly rational, albeit with hallucinations, while Jill has been extremely irritable and volatile. I think they’ve both been infected by mutant strains, but different ones from each other.”

“Any idea when?”

“In Sam’s case, I’m going to guess Reginald, since the symptoms developed shortly after he was bitten. That raises some concerns about Reginald. As for Jill, unless you can think of a time where she got infected, I don’t know.”

“What about when she got hit with some of that acid mucus,” I say.

Both men turn toward me, looking surprised.

“She got hit by one of those spitter zombies. You washed the mucus off her, but it could have still infected her.”

Garret thinks that over and reluctantly nods.

“Good catch, Sam,” Dr. Probak says approvingly. “It stands to reason that the infection vector is similar with each type of zombie.”

“Then you need to test Reginald, now! If he’s a zombie, we need to use different protocols with him. I’ll get him brought over here immediately,” Garret says.

Reginald infected me? That bastard!

A few minutes later, Reginald is brought into the lab and strapped on a table. He sees me and Jill in our rooms and grins.

“Having some troubles, I see,” he says to Garret and Dr. Probak.

Dr. Probak draws a sample of blood from Reginald.

“Oh, you really are having troubles, aren’t you? Need to confirm a suspicion?”

Dr. Probak ignores Reginald and takes the drawn blood over to the centrifuge and starts his test. Reginald looks at me in my room, and maliciously smiles at me and licks his lips.

The next few minutes feel like an eternity and when the centrifuge is finally done, I realize I’ve been holding my breath and release it with a gasp that turns into a cough.

“Having some health issues, Sammy boy?” Reginald asks me with false sympathy.

“Quiet, Reginald or we’ll make you be quiet,” Garret tersely orders.

Reginald shuts his mouth and glares at Garret.

Dr. Probak compares my test with Reginald’s and Jill’s tests and sighs.

“Reginald has the same strain of the zombie virus as Sam has. He doesn’t have the same infection that Jill has.”

Fuck, I’m infected. I don’t think my relationship with Michelle is going to survive this.

Roger wheezes, “Somehow I think I got the better end of the deal.”

“Not now, Roger,” I agitatedly say.

“So, Jill and Sam are becoming different types of zombies, while Reginald here is one?” Garret says.

“That seems to be the case,” Dr. Probak responds.

“How is it that he still’s able to talk? All the other zombies we’ve encountered have been mindless.”

Dr. Probak shakes his head and says, “I don’t know. I never worked on any of these strains.
