Eha

Eha watched the two Human lovers retire to the bedroom as Grace approached and handed her whatever prize the bureaucrat had brought.

Standard data chip. Huh.

Eha slipped it into the tablet she had been reading from and called up a menu. Grace and Xiuying silently rose and moved behind her to read over narrow shoulders, no doubt.

The file was a copy of a military report, marked top secret and most urgent and several other things. Eha wasn’t sure how the woman had gotten her hands on it, or who had sent her as a courier with it.

Obviously, Anya and Oluchi would be making enough of a scene in the bedroom, if she understood the body language correctly, so Eha was to read this now and then presumably prepare questions.

The profanity that almost slipped out of her mouth wasn’t one Humans were familiar with. And not something to yell in a quiet room. Eha barely managed to bite it back.

Ajax was here? Now?

She read deeper, amazed at the insanity that had apparently overtaken her mate when she had left the man without adult supervision. Eha could see that she would need to remain extremely close to him for the rest of his life, if he was going to keep being a hero like this.

Pirates destroyed. Westphalian incursions detected.

And he was here in the system, right now. Somewhere overhead.

How did she get to him?

Eha turned to Xiuying.

“Wake Lucas,” she said almost silently. “Quietly.”

The man nodded and moved on ghost’s feet to the fourth bedroom.

Hopefully, Oluchi and Anya would be making just enough noise and entertainment to distract whoever was supposed to be listening to the rest of the suite, although she had no doubt that everything was being recorded.

Eha returned to the report and kept reading.

Good, they were consulting with Lazarus as to how to handle this new development.

He would have the best understanding that Addison Wolcott was not just another game piece they could move around. It had taken Eha years to appreciate that about the man.

What would the Rio Alliance Navy choose to do at this point? Eha was uncertain, but obviously wheels within wheels were turning.

Xiuying emerged a moment later with Lucas, still in uniform as something of their guardian, but unarmed and without shoes.

Eha read through the cover details and then handed it to Grace, trusting that woman’s esoteric background to extract details that might have gotten missed.

While Grace read, Eha slithered silently close to the front door of the suite into which she was being held. The curtains were drawn on the windows for the evening, and she could not unlock them. And probably not shatter one with anything less than four people heaving a table through it. Faint noises emerged from behind Oluchi’s door. From the tenor, Human sexual encounters were more vocally robust than Churquen, but they couldn’t wrap tails around each other, so Eha wasn’t entirely sure what form it might take.

At least Oluchi and Anya seemed to be impressively involved with the process, even if she was as much a spy and imposter as Oluchi.
