Chapter nineteen

So, we made the two Jumps, the first was a slow speed Jump to the spot about two parsecs out, we both turned and began to accelerate toward Maeghen. Our AI’s coordinated the Jump and our view fields changed.

I instantly went from looking at the view screen to make sure we weren’t going to run into anything to checking our full-on 3D threat sphere to see what was around us. And there was plenty around us.

Let me backup for a moment to explain the Jumps again. When we Jumped out of Hoag, we basically Jumped about seven light-years laterally away from Hoag and sort of toward the galactic center into the dead-zone we parked in while we slept. Our next Jump was one hundred and forty one light-years ‘south’ on the galactic plane to put us the two parsecs out, but facing directly in-spin. If you do that mental math, then we were Jumping in-spin to Maeghen a bit further ‘east’ than we would have if we’d just Jumped directly in. Anyway, I hope that makes sense.

Why is all of that important? Because, we had a waiting committee sitting far out on the system edge where they expected us to appear coming in from Hoag. There were seven small and medium sized patrol type ships parked out there in a loose cloud about a thirty thousand kliks apart and two hundred fifteen thousand kliks away. I’m sooo happy we had the upgraded military sensor system to give us that visibility.

Boc reached out by QET to her buyer who was instantly surprised she wasn’t where she expected Boc to appear.

They all shifted to RF to include us, so the images and voice were a bit fuzzy to start, with a bit of a delay, as they all scrambled to accelerate towards us from their distant position.

The female captain of the squadron appeared in a message box next to Boc on our view screen. I tightened my lips as I expected anger and vitriol. That didn’t happen.

She nodded at Boc and then towards us, “Ah, so you are the human. You are the Captain Derek Hamilton of fame.” She nodded again with a thin smile of acknowledgement toward me, “I’d like to congratulate you on your escape here last time. I’ve used that video several times with my team to show them your antics.”

I was fuming, knowing she was going to insult me, but that didn’t happen. I cocked my head to one side, curious about where she was going.

She just nodded with a thin smile, “I can guess you are not looking forward to being here again. I know that my sisters would not be looking forward to your return either.”

She could see the flat but slightly curious expression on my face and realized what was happening. She paused and instantly became serious and focused, “Okay, let me get through the administrative protocol first.”

She paused as she looked off to her upper right and mentally grabbed her required script, “I see there are males on your ships.
