Whoever had the bright idea to light up a giant bonfire, in the middle of summer, after a long day of frying up fish and boiling shrimp under the hot sun, ought to have been shot, in Ben’s opinion.

The 17th Annual Shell Grove Oyster Festival was in full swing, even though the sun had gone down hours ago. The celebration had moved to Edison Beach near the pier, where a bonfire had been lit—sanctioned and carefully supervised by the fire department, of course—and drinks were flowing. The festival had started earlier that afternoon with an oyster fry on Main Street, along with live music from several different bands. Booths from local vendors had lined both sides of the street, complete with bouncy houses and water slides for the kiddos. Ben had been on shift for most of the day, and a hot fire blazing in his face on a balmy evening was so not the relaxing night he’d had in mind.

Olivia naked and spread out beneath him on his bed, sheets thrown to the floor, ceiling fan cooling the sweat from their bodies after a really rigorous first round… Now that was his idea of some well-deserved R&R.

Walking away from her standing there in her unbuttoned shorts last night had been absolutely fucking miserable but absolutely fucking necessary. His head had been messed up ever since his altercation with his father, and things only got worse once Olivia had started throwing curveball after curveball at him. First with the massage and then with the proposition of sex. But hell, she’d baited him. Challenged him to prove that he could deliver on giving her an orgasm she wouldn’t soon forget. How was he supposed to turn that down?

But still…he couldn’t have taken her like that.

Despite licking her to sweet completion, he’d still been spitting fucking mad. A lot of that anger hadn’t just been focused on his old man, but on himself, too. Allowing Olivia to give him that massage and think that she in any way owed him was wrong. Whatever was developing between them wasn’t exactly a friendship, and quite honestly, he didn’t know what the hell it was. Not after last night. But she deserved a lot better than being the fix that cured his toxic thoughts.

Olivia deserved to be the center. The focus.

Not the distraction.

And last night she would have been. He would have used her in ways he would have been ashamed of. But at the same time, wasn’t that what she’d proposed? That they use each other to slake their lusts while they were both relationship-free? He shouldn’t have felt guilty if he’d caved and given her exactly what she’d been asking for, right?

Nah. He knew better.

When he finally got her underneath him—because it was going to happen—there would be no bullshit baggage cluttering up his thoughts. When it was the two of them, it was going to be just the two of them.

“Playing with your dipstick again, Crawford?”

Hunter’s voice yanked him from his Olivia-inspired reverie.
