Was Aiden chasing the cat or the woman?

Hands down the woman.

And it was a literal chase as he ran after her down a narrow, residential street with no sidewalk, leaving them both vulnerable to getting nailed by an SUV driven by a mom yelling at her kids in the backseat instead of paying attention to the road. Or teenagers out joyriding in their parents’ golf cart on their way to the beach. As if his afternoon couldn’t have gotten any more surreal after eating pudding and playing Scrabble with Mia’s grandmother and a retired salty fisherman.

Why had she brought him along to the nursing home?

He couldn’t figure it out. Nadine obviously meant a great deal to Mia—why would she have exposed the sweet woman to her surly boss who had a giant target painted on his back? It didn’t make sense. But he couldn’t deny sitting around that table, listening to Nadine and Jonesy bicker back and forth, while exchanging amused grins with Mia every few minutes, had felt remarkably…revitalizing. Once he realized he wasn’t on the verge of getting cussed out by a horde of geriatrics, it was actually nice to just have an afternoon free of work. A quiet place where he could turn the analytical side of his brain off and briefly pretend he was part of a welcoming community. Even part of a family.

Maybe this place isn’t so bad.

When Mia abruptly took a sharp turn and cut through someone’s yard, he wondered why the hell he was still following her. What was compelling him to assist her in wrangling a runaway cat? Well, the answer, however nonsensical, however irrational, was simple.

If she was doing it, he was too.

“Mia, hold up!”

“I’ve almost got him!”

She was hurdling over abandoned children’s toys, leaping over flower beds, and dodging lawn gnomes. Dammit, what was she doing? At this rate, she was liable to trip and break an ankle or fall in some bushes and cut herself up. He couldn’t form enough saliva at the thought of her getting hurt. Picturing her wincing in pain made him feel like he was standing on a boat as it rocked side to side in a storm, horrible seasickness making him turn green. He was pushing his legs faster to catch up to her in case of a spill, but her familiarity with the neighborhood gave her the advantage. Plus, he was wearing goddamn dress shoes.

Then…she was gone.

What the hell?

“Mia!”

She’d dashed around the corner of one house and apparently disappeared into thin air. Nowhere to be seen. He stopped in his tracks, looking wildly in all directions. He was hoping all these neighbors were out for a nice Sunday stroll or enjoying the sunshine down at the beach and not staring through their curtains at the stranger in the middle of the street, sweating through two layers of clothing.

He was about to open up his lungs and shout her name again when he heard, “Aiden!”

His head whipped to the left, to the right. “Where are you?”

“I’m in between 937 and 939! I need help!”

He knew it.
