CHAPTER

“WE’VE GOT TO GET YOU out of here,” Luke whispers, his eyes never leaving Bas. “Drop the wards,” Luke says. I blink. What? No. If I did that, anything could come in. “Do it. I’ve been thinking about how some ghosts are able to move things and do stuff, and I’ve been working on that.” One half of his mouth twitches into a smile. “Mostly while you’ve been asleep.” He shrugs. “There isn’t a lot else I can do. Anyway, I think I can help.”
“No!” Grace stands up, nearly knocking her chair over in her haste. “We are not killing anyone who isn’t evil.” She paces from the window to her chair. “That’s not who we are.”
“Some monsters deserve to be killed,” Bas says. “You saw her collection. She’s got a bunch of souls in jars, Grace. Think of them. They can’t move on, they can’t be reborn, they can’t do anything but sit there, trapped.”
I stand up, too, incensed. “I am not a monster,” I snap. “Those souls in there, they chose that fate. There are options other than Heaven and Hell, and you’d know that if you pulled your head out of your ass.”
“Who would choose that?” he scoffs. “It doesn’t matter, once you’re gone, we’re setting all of these souls free.”
My temper flares, rage and power boiling just under the surface. Oh hell, no. Ignoring the pain in my arm and the throbbing in my head, I raise my hand and push my power out, encompassing the Watchers. I tighten my hold, and it hurts like hell. I’ve expended so much already today, I feel like I don’t have much left to give. The six of them freeze immediately.
Luke folds his arms across his chest. “I think I should have expected you would do something like that. What are you going to do now?”
“Get the hell out of here, in a minute. But there’s something I gotta do, first.” I stride past Bas and the others until I reach my armoire. Then I roll up my sleeve and stretch the skin on either side of the cut from Barty until it wells with fresh blood. Dipping my fingers in the blood, I draw a thick sigil across the entire front of the armoire, bridging across the doors. Then I slam my hand onto it, infusing it with power until it flashes red and hums with energy.
That done, I walk over to Bas, and get right up in his face. His eyes flit back and forth, but that’s the only motion he’s got. “See that over there?” I gesture at the armoire. “That’s a blood-cursed sigil. Anyone touches it, tries to deactivate it, or tries to mess with it in any way, they’ll be transported straight to Hell the hard way. No comebacks, no healing, nothing. Dead and there won’t be enough of Humpty Dumpty to put them back together again.”
His nostrils flare. Interesting. I wonder how much energy it takes for even that. Then I march up to Iggy.
