Chapter Eighteen. Heart-to-Heart

IDEALLY, I WOULD HAVE BROUGHT the Relict Technician with me. He could have helped setup the long-distance comms, not to mention the other complex systems on the ancient station. But Gerd Urgeh Pu-Pu Urgeh was still not back in the game, which was starting to look more and more like flagrantly bad behavior. Whatever concerns required the Technician’s attention on the Syam Tro VII Refuge, he was still a member of my team and had to take part in the life of the ship. And so I was planning to have a very serious talk with the Relict as soon as he showed back up.

The second our shuttle left the frigate’s hangar, the normally taciturn Gerd Imran turned to me suddenly from the pilot’s seat:

“Gnat, you said Relict Faction players could change their exit point into the real world before. Is that offer still good?”

I admit, I was taken aback by that question but of course answered that it was still in force.

“It’s been getting uncomfortable under the Dome,” the Dagestani athlete admitted. “Whether they’re trying to get me to spy on you and tell them everything Team Gnat is up to or making awkward attempts to bribe me with easy women, I can’t even relax in my own room anymore. Recently, I practically had to physically kick two particularly brazen skanks out of my room. They just wouldn’t take no for an answer. Then yesterday, these people I didn’t know who also weren’t Human-3 Faction players tried to give me a hard time and pressure me to get you to go off and rescue the people on Poko-Poko.”

“Did you figure out who they were?” I asked in alarm and the Gladiator nodded.

“Surrogates sent by the rich kids’ parents. At first they offered me money, a whole briefcase stuffed full of cash. But when I refused, they started threatening me. I can say for sure that the unsavory characters also approached Dmitry Zheltov and Svetka Vereshchagina. I don’t understand how they got let into a secret facility with no clearance either. I filed a complaint with Leng Tarasov, but the leader of the H3 Faction refused to kick them out. After that, he even said that ‘Gnat had too quick a takeoff and that made him full of himself. We have lots of questions for him and the faction he leads. So let him work for the good of his country and solve the hostage problem to prove he’s the real Kung of Earth.’ I think Tarasov is being pressured, too. And I think it’s coming from someone even higher up than the curators of the Dome project.”

Ahem... Too quick a takeoff... What is that? Basic envy or a statement of fact that the Russian faction and its curators had lost their leverage over me? The Human-3 Faction leadership no longer had any way of pressuring me. I didn’t depend on them financially or politically and my real body was safe on the far-away Miyelonian station of Kasti-Utsh III.
