Chapter 12: Thomas
KISSING JESS AFTER her split was no different than before. But there was a mounting sense of excitement deep inside of me, and I was tempted to grab her right then and there.
I pulled away before the temptation took hold. When I opened my eyes, Jessâs expression was strange.
âWhat?â I said.
Jess leaned back and stared up at something over my head. Her teeth dug into her soft bottom lip. âI donât know,â she whispered. âI guess Iâm just scared.â
A fist tightened inside of me. Of course. Not only could I see the fear on her face, but I knew for a fact what Kurt had put her through. My sense of hearing was superior than that of most humans; I heard every word that Kurt had said to her, how he tried to manipulate her into thinking she was the one who drove him away.
Thinking about someone hurting Jess like that made me so angry, and that much more determined to prove to her that not all men were like that.
That I wasnât like that.
Jess was staring downward. I put my fingers to her chin, tilting her face up until her gaze met my eyes.
âYou had some bad luck and got stuck with an asshole. But heâs gone now. Youâre going to be happy,â I said.
âI was happy with Kurt in the beginning, and it went bad,â she said. âHow do I know Iâll be happy...â She trailed off. Her lips shaped the words that she couldnât bring herself to speak. How do I know Iâll be happy with you?
I stroked her cheek, catching some stray wisps of hair under my fingers. I tucked them back behind the ear. âYouâll just have to have faith,â I said.
I searched her eyes and saw fear and hurt. It broke something inside of me.
Slowly, I slid my hand to the back of her head, my fingers tangling up in her smooth, fine hair. I lowered my face and barely touched her lips with mine. I didnât want to rush her. But the moment I made that connection, Jess thawed, and she wrapped her arms around my neck, pulling me against her until there was no space between us.
I hovered carefully over her body while she lowered herself onto her back. She opened her mouth, and her tongue danced a tentative rhythm against mine. She arched her back, bringing her body up to touch mine. Her breasts grazed my chest, surprising me with its softness. Electricity shot from my spine to my fingertips, my blood rushed, and I stiffened inside of my jeans.
Damn, I thought. If we kept going, I would poke a hole in the front of my pants. I forced myself to break away.
Her eyes opened slowly, her lips still stung from the pressure of my mouth.
âJess, youâre vulnerable right now. I donât want to take advantage of you again,â I said.
Jess blinked her vibrant blue eyes, looking dazed. Then, her head seemed to clear, and her brows knitted together. âAgain?â
I gulped.
