Chapter 11

1 year later

Christian’s Confusion

‘Christian you missed Jack’s party. What happened?’ Christian could hear the frustration in Sally’s voice over the phone line. This was the third time he had stood her up this month and she had every right to be angry.

‘It was a big night in Emergency and ...’

‘You’re not an emergency doctor. There are others to do that. You are the surgeon who works on them after they’re stabilized.’

‘I know ... I know,’ he replied. ‘But what could I do? It was bedlam. I had to help.’ He heard her sigh. ‘I’ll make it up to you, Sally.’

He hated lying to her, but the truth was he didn’t have a clue where he was last night. The blackouts were coming more frequently and they were beginning to frighten him, but what frightened him most was the blood and the smell of smoke in his clothes and the dirt under his nails. Some mornings he woke up in the cabin at Sullivan Canyon not knowing how he got there and other times he suddenly found himself on the balcony of his plush LA apartment with his clothes dirty or reeking of furnace smoke.

‘I’ve booked a table for us at lo Mangio tonight.’ She stayed silent on the end of the phone line. ‘I’m sorry Sally, I can’t say more than that. Please come. I can pick you up at the usual time?’

She sighed again, ‘Alright Christian. That would be nice.’

Eight Hours Earlier

He’d cruised through this neighborhood before and he chose it because the hookers were sadder, lonelier and more addicted to the drugs that ravaged their bodies, than their sisters on the brightly lit streets several blocks away. This is where the girls came when the toxins in their system had almost destroyed them and they had nowhere else to go. This was the end of the road for some and le Segador helped them get there sooner. He had no time any more for the slow ritual of courting of his victims. The other sides of his personality had to function in their daily lives if he were to be given full reign to his killing needs. So he came to
