Chapter 15

He’d expected that they’d be this evening’s center of attention. In most of Emanuel’s interactions with the Lost to date, they’d been attracted by the smell of his dinner on the few nights that he hunted for something a little fresher than hard tack, or by the noise of combat. Realistically, the reason he’d encountered so few of the creatures so far was that most nights, he ate standard nutrient bars and slept in his soft suit. He was hermetically sealed from the outside world and had a minimal footprint which made him very hard to find.

The rest of his team wasn’t so lucky, but so long as his ammo held out, Emanuel felt like he could keep them safe enough. He’d only used a single clip of the flechette ammo for his pistol, and he still had several magazines left for his rifle, along with a few other odds and ends. Each bullet was precious, but he didn’t expect to run out any time soon.

It was an hour after the sun went down that Carnegie first raised the alarm. A pack of four was moving toward the building. Their motion made it look like they’d picked up the scent, but were still trying to locate the source. So, they weren’t yet bearing down on Emanuel’s little fortress yet, but they would be soon enough.

Emanuel stood and raised the rifle to his shoulder. At this distance, he was aiming for center mass. They were tough bastards, but if he did enough damage, they’d bleed out before they got halfway to him. It was more of a sure thing than going for the head. He fired two shots which would become clean kills in a second or two, before calling out to his team down below, “Be ready. Two more coming up the stairs.”

He heard the motion of the hunters fortifying and repositioning below, even as the Lost bellowed and charged toward them. Emanuel was confident in the nine-on-two odds that would take place below him but felt better about a nine-on-one fight. In one smooth motion, Emanuel stowed his rifle, drew his pistol, and hopped down from the building right behind the intruders as they entered and shot the rear one at near point-blank range. Despite that, it almost made it to the top of the stairs on momentum alone.

Giving up the high ground for sentimental reasons was foolhardy, and though Carnegie didn’t have time to explain that in detail, he did blare the danger close alarm over comms just in time for Emanuel to somersault forward. The blow that followed him probably would have taken his head, armor or no armor. The claws that had only just missed him left deep grooves in the wall, and the hammer blow that followed knocked a chunk of decaying concrete loose.

From his position on the ground, Emanuel rolled over and emptied a magazine. The one that struck him got two in the head, and the clouds of razors from the two
