Chapter 18

Razor sighed as the weight of what he was about to do washed through him. The last three days had been – incredible. He set the report he was viewing down on his desk and stood up to stretch. The weather was supposed to clear by morning according to the readings. He had ordered Cutter to send a team to each side of the city to meet with the men in charge. If they did not lay down their weapons and surrender to the human military, he would order the city flattened. Anyone remaining after the twelve hour deadline would die.

He walked over to the window, watching as a light dusting of snow continued to fall. His thoughts turned to Kali. A satisfied smile curved his lips. He enjoyed listening to her tales of when she was a child.

He discovered she had broken her arm when she was twelve when she fell from a wall while walking on it. She described how several children in the neighborhood where she grew up learned the art of Parkour. It was the method that she used to move about the city.

“Parkour allows me to move about the city in the most efficient way by using my surroundings. I ‘see’ the buildings around me and use them,” she explained. “It is fun, fast and since not many people can do it, it gives me a measure of safety. Tim, Jason, Destin, and a couple other guys from the neighborhood are the only ones that I know of that use it as well.”

They spent the time when he was not working making love and talking. He had been furious when she told him late last night of Badrick’s visit to her brother. He promised to investigate the Usoleum’s request for women in exchange for weapons. She told him that she wished she had just killed the blue bastard when she had the chance.

“It would have saved countless lives,” she had murmured quietly.

During their talks, he discovered she had a unique sense of humor that often left him chuckling. He shared things with her that he never thought about before. He told her of the mischief he and his brothers and sisters had gotten into when they were younger. As the oldest, he was always blamed for corrupting the younger ones.

“How many brothers and sisters do you have?” Kali had asked him as she lay in his arms late last night.

“I have five brothers and three sisters,” he had told her. “I’m the oldest. As such, it was always my responsibility to watch out for the others. There are large creatures that live in my world that can be very dangerous. It is important to stay on the paths that have been laid out so that you remain safe when traveling between my home and the city.”

He remembered his shock when she had laughed. “It’s not like I’ll have to worry about that,” she had teased before she sighed. “It’s nice, listening to you talk about your world.
