ROUND 1: New Zealand GP, Western Springs Stadium, Auckland, New Zealand, Saturday, 23 March

I knew I was on competitive machinery compared to my first GP season, but any optimism I had wasn’t shared, with some bookies offering 500–1 against me winning it.

I’m not a gambling man, I didn’t even look at the odds as I don’t bet much, if ever, and it was only what people told me later in the season. Maybe I should have had a flutter.

It was a nice first round. I always like to get the first one out of the way, it’s good just to get back in the groove. Usually whoever wins the first Grand Prix isn’t there at the end of the year so, for me, the opening round isn’t that important. It’s a long season and if you peak too early you will run out of steam; normally those who start well, struggle at the end of the season.

I was seventh, my best ever display, but I finished fourth in my semi-final.

It was great to head out and do a GP on the world stage rather than just in Europe, and it was just about getting some points on the board to show that I wasn’t just there to make up the numbers.

The biggest highlight for me was a 20,000-feet tandem sky dive outside Auckland, that gave me such an adrenalin rush.
