She ran from his startled stare, ran in the direction the soldier had pointed, formulating her thoughts as she flew. It was not difficult to identify the prison, which appeared to have an entire contingent of redcoats guarding the crude structure. With only a vague notion of what she might do, she pushed past the outermost men, ignoring their ribald calls to her, and walked straight up to the door.
Here she was forced to pause due to the presence of a stout soldier with a rifle across his chest who stood barring the entrance. With a mingling of respect and friendliness which was difficult for her, she approached him. "Sir, my father is one of Cumberland's officers and now one of his provosts, and he has sent me here to inquire concerning several of your prisoners."
His return gaze was friendly and open. "Fair enough, young miss. Inquire away."
Morag thought it best to name more than just one, so she sandwiched Malcolm Douglas in the middle, feeling that her voice, her eyes, everything about her betrayed something as she spoke those two words out loud.
The soldier cleared his throat. "Those are all rebels of the first order, miss, powerful families. Who did you say your father was?"
She smiled and drew a deep breath. She must go slowly. "Geoffrey Macpherson."
"Related to Macpherson of Cluny? We haven't caught that old buzzard yet. some say he could put up in the crags of Ben Alder for the next twenty years and even the eagles wouldn't find the nest he built for himself."
"My father bides yonder, gravely wounded in Cumberland's service, as loyal as you, sir, as loyal as any!" How acid the words tasted as she spoke them with purposeful relish. "As provost he has families in his district who make inquiries of him; he needs proper facts to make proper decisions. May I speak with some of the prisoners?"
She held her breath, but her heart beat so loudly she would not have been surprised if he had heard it.
"Not a chance. Pretty as you are, not a chance, girl. The prisoners are to be allowed no visitors. Ironclad rule."
You great dolt! Morag thought. She took a step closer to him, wondering in frustration what approach would most easily win him. "There are times when every rule serves best if temporarily bent or broken." He had trouble digesting that. Should she push him or give him time?
