This should be fun.

Fifteen minutes later, Oliver pulls in front of the quaint farmhouse. “This is where the Alpha lives?” He climbs out of his Jeep. “This looks like it was designed and decorated on HGTV.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Oliver laughs. “I’ve been bored lately. Television has become my friend.”

Xavier steps onto the porch, followed by Jasper, before we move two feet from the Jeep. “Celeste. When I welcomed you into my home, I didn’t realize I was opening up a shelter. What do you want, Oliver?” he asks, glaring at my companion.

“We need to talk,” he answers. “It’s about something that involves the lycan.” Xavier walks off the porch, heading toward benches that are surrounded by yellow flowers.

“We’ll talk over here. You’re not welcome in my home.”

“I understand.”

I follow Oliver to the bench and sit next to him, not sure where the hostility is coming from. Jasper sits next to his father.

“What’s this about?” Xavier asks.

“Several months ago, one in our community came up missing.”

“How does that involve the lycan?”

Oliver is calm and doesn’t respond to the jabs being thrown by Xavier. “Her body was found floating in the Mississippi River. She was nearly beheaded, and her body was covered in large scratches, consistent with an animal attack.”

“You think she was murdered by one of my own? By a lycan?” Xavier connects the dots.

“Since then, five other women have also come up missing. All human and none have been found.”

“Oliver, this is North Mississippi. Lycan aren’t the only animals that roam the night. Hell, there are bobcats, panthers, and boars. It could’ve been any number of things that killed that girl.”

Oliver nods. “Aye, but none of those are capable of producing the clean cut that would’ve separated her head from her body. Especially someone with vampire strength.”

Xavier sighs. “How can I help?” I feel my body relax at his words.

Oliver crosses his legs. “I think we can agree, no matter if the girls are human, vampire, or lycan, this needs to stop.”

“Agreed.”

“Dad. The girl Jackson’s been seeing may be missing.”

“What do you mean?”

“When she found out Jackson wasn’t here, she left, heading back to the dorm. We found her car downtown,” I answer.

“That could be anything. There are dozens of restaurants within walking distance of downtown.”

“True, but Emeryn isn’t a ‘go to a restaurant on my own’ type of person.”

“Might I suggest we go look for her?” Oliver stands.

“We’ll meet you there,” Xavier suggests as he and Jasper head toward a newer model SUV.

Oliver and I load into his Jeep and head toward downtown with the lycan following close behind. “That went better than I expected,” Oliver announces with a smirk.

“What’s the story between you two?” I ask.

“There’s not much of a story, just the natural selection of things. You know, wolves and vampires.”

It doesn’t take long to reach downtown, and we find a parking spot not far from Emeryn’s car. Since first discovering it, I’ve called her phone at least thirty times. It continues going straight to voicemail.
