More months pass and Richard settles into his role as ruler of the land. Prince Jacob, found wandering the countryside is brought back to Nottinghill and locked away in the dungeon. The villagers return to their homes, crops are planted, merchants set up once more in the courtyard, hawking their wares, and Robert is named Advisor to the King.

The kingdom flourishes, but the shadow inside both Queen Joylene and Prince Jacob also reside in Randall. It’s not long before it takes root and grows, and the once easy-going King becomes darker, his greed growing, and his judgment increasingly erratic.

As he sits hearing cases, he casts judgments that make no sense to his subjects.

“I sentence you both to the stockade,” he exclaims over a case where two villagers wish to trade animals.

Robert looks at him questioningly.

“Your majesty, isn’t the stockade a bit severe? All they wish to do is exchange a mule for a horse. It is not a crime.”

The king glares at Robert, as the knights jump to do the King’s bidding, fearful for their lives.

“Who do you think you are, questioning my orders?” he bites out.

Turning to two other soldiers standing at the back of the room, he yells.

“Take this traitor...” he gestures at Robert, “to the dungeon.”

Rising from his throne, he storms out of the room, as the guards rush to Robert.

“I’m so sorry, Robert,” whispers one of the men, as they lead him down the stairs and place him in a cold, damp cell.

As Robert is locked away, King Randall hurries up the stone steps to the Treasury. Entering the room, he bars the door behind him and paces around the room, running his hands through the many stacks of coins, clinking sounds filling the air. He admires the gold goblets, necklaces set with shiny jewels, and chest upon chest of fancy silver tea sets and eating utensils. He grins as he realizes it’s all his to do with as he pleases.

“I think it’s time to buy me a bride,” he declares, as he unbars the door and rushes from the room.

“Scribe, come to me. I have a missive to dictate!” he yells, the sound echoing through the stone halls of the castle.

The Scribe rushes into the throne room, carrying his ink well, quill, and rolls of parchment. From his belt hangs a small bag of sand he’ll use to quickly dry the ink. His tattered robe drags the ground, as it is two sizes too big for him. Even those who work for the King cannot escape the poverty he’s thrust on the kingdom with his greed.

The King looks the Scribe over, distaste evident on his face, while he lists the terms of his latest proclamation. The Scribe quickly scrawls out the words of the King, tosses sand on the parchment, then hands it to Randall to ensure it meets his approval. The King nods and tosses it back to him.

“Make copies and have it sent throughout the land. I need a Queen, now!”

The Scribe rushes from the hall to do as demanded, as the King reclines on his throne, quite pleased with himself.
