After my pancakes, Sunday stretches before me in all its unending boredom. Iâm sick of sitting in my room reading. My mom picked up a sick coworkerâs shift so the house is quiet and empty.
I take the bus to Uptown and wander around the library there for a few hours, holing up in a corner chair with some books about ravens. I check out one: Ravens: Friends or Foe by Wayne Lockgood.
I stop on one passage, running my finger under the words:
Upon death, a raven brings a personâs soul to the underworld, the land of the dead. But if the death was premature then the raven is able to carry the soul back to the living so the soul can avenge its own murder.
As I read this, Iâm suddenly cold and pull my hoodie around me tighter.
Was Sadie murdered? Will she come back to avenge her death?
Later in the book it talks about how ravens are omens of death. Everything I read about ravens talks about darkness and omens and dying. And this boy is named Raven. Is that a warning for me to stay away from him?
With the book on ravens tucked into my bag, I decide to stop and try on a few tops at Urban Outfitters, tempted but also knowing that same money will buy four tops at the Goodwill. Although Iâm window-shopping, Iâm really keeping an eye out for Raven. As I pass the street to his block, Iâm tempted to go talk to him and confront him about Sadie, but something stops me.
I walk up and down the sidewalks watching people and wishing I had money to go see a movie. I start my new job at the pool on Monday and am excited because I just found out Iâll be working with Curtis and some other people I know from school. I canât swim well enough to be a lifeguard like Curtis, but they hired me to do secretary stuff in the office. I canât wait. Every penny I earn is going to go toward my college fund. My grandmother left some money in her will designated for my college fund, but who knows if my dad has spent it or not.
I waste the entire afternoon wandering around, not wanting to admit to myself that Iâm there because Iâm hoping to run into Raven. I even head down to the clothing store where I first talked to him and walk around. Everyone is out on the sidewalks on this sunny summer Sunday. Near the Uptown Theater, I cast a glance toward the direction of his apartment. I see a group of kids and my heart starts to pound but within seconds I can tell itâs a group of college guys.
I debate walking over to the Lake of the Isles, but decide if I run into Raven that will only come across as desperate. He will see right through me. And I canât shake the foreboding feeling I have after reading about ravens being bad omens.
