TATYANNA
As I slumped against Onias's chest, I took his assurances with a grain of salt. Who was he to make promises like that? He wouldn't blame me? He wouldn't let me be punished? Didn't he see I had already suffered plenty of punishment already?
It didn't matter. I couldn't fixate on him or what he was doing. I had bigger problems. Namely, Niraela had taken a special interest in me, and I knew she aimed to drive a wedge between me and Onias. As far as I was concerned, she'd been like a jealous ex-lover since the moment I joined the search. Now, she was growing more aggressive, and I was certain that even if she was not prowling around in my periphery, she would have one of her men monitoring me.
"I'm going to lie down," I told Onias as we approached the camp. He gave me a solemn nod, but did not follow. It seemed he had his own reservations about being seen with me now.
With a defeated sigh, I went to the fire and made my bed, eager to pass the night and be on our way. Until now, I had conflicting emotions about finding Trydan at all. Sometimes, I wanted desperately to meet him face-to-face and demand answers. Other times, I hoped he had already met his demise, and I would never have to hear his sickening voice again. Most of the time, I floated in some ambivalent state in between. But now, with Niraela breathing down my neck and the prospect of returning to the palace empty-handed looming over me, I was desperate to find him, if only to clear my name.
As I lay staring into the fire long into the night, I considered all the many possibilities ahead. From the ground, it was impossible to know how much territory we had covered, or even what direction we were heading in anymore. The scepter and the tapestry were useful clues, but they only provided more questions, not answers. Wherever Trydan was, he had concealed his tracks remarkably well if he was the source of the blood, which led me to believe that it wasn't his blood back there at all.
Eventually, I fell into a troubled sleep, dreaming of another search in the forest. Only in my dreams, I was searching for Onias, and every time I came close to wrapping my arms around his neck and pulling him into a sweet embrace, he vanished again.
The next morning, I woke in a foul mood. Thankfully, the last of the wine sickness seemed to have dissipated, and I woke without a pounding headache for the first time in many days. The sound of Onias's cheerful voice ringing out across the camp made me groan and cover my head with my blanket until I could push the dreams away and compose myself. Then I emerged and packed my things, assuring myself that today would be the day. It had to be.
As we marched onward, I redoubled my efforts, stopping to inspect anything out of the ordinary.
