Briggs tensed when he saw the headlights. He stopped, too, and turned to her.
âIâm sure itâs just some of the hands coming to look for us. Hopefully, the tornado drove your attacker underground for a bit.â To be honest, he wasnât really sure anymore, and after the night they had had so far, anything seemed possible. Despite the storm, he had his suspicions about what had really caused the herd to stampede. His bison were usually even-tempered and docile.
She gave a little nod and started walking again, but he could sense she was tense and poised to run. He kept his guard up as well.
âItâs Dad and one of the hands,â Madison said, exhaling as the vehicle drew closer. âThank You, Lord.â
Briggs silently echoed her sentiment.
The white dually pulled up beside them and stopped. A hand named Stockton rolled down the driverâs side window and peered out. Jake leaned in from the passenger side. Both men uttered a declaration of thanks.
âWe thought yâall got caught out in the tornado,â Stockton said. His young face showed obvious relief.
âWe sort of did. But we hid out under the embankment by the old pond until it blew over. Thankfully, it went around us. How are the rest of the hands? Anyone injured?â Briggs asked, looking over Stocktonâs lanky frame behind the truck door. He had a boyish look about him, and one long, skinny arm hung out the window.
âWe all made it back to the barn ahead of the tornado. It turned back the other direction before it got to us. Everyoneâs fine.â He motioned for them to get into the truck. âYâall look like you could use a ride in. Maybe we can hash out the details once everyone is dry.â
Briggs helped Madison into the back seat and jumped in behind her. She apologized for getting the seat wet.
âItâs a work truck, maâam. Itâll be fine.â Stockton gave a little chuckle.
She was always worried about little niceties, even when everything was going wrong. Her pinched brow proved she was still concerned, despite Stocktonâs reassurances.
âThe herd looks to be okay from what I can tell in the darkness. Weâll have to round them all up again in the morning.â Briggs was talking to the men, but his thoughts were still on Madison.
âYeah, Lance is already getting everyone briefed on that.â Stockton dodged a pothole in the field that Jake pointed out.
âGood. Hopefully, none of them will get too far before morning. Any damage to the ranch?â Briggs gripped the seat back in front of him as the truck swayed with another swerve.
âOne of the hands called while we were driving out. The bunkhouse had a little damage to the roof, but nothing too bad. Also, the barn got some hail damage. Hopefully, we wonât find any leaks.â Stockton ran down a list of smaller things, like downed trees.
âIt certainly could have been worse. Maybe the worst of it missed us.â Briggs blew out a breath.
They were soon back at the house,
