SPECIAL SAUCE

Bobby hardly ever allowed himself to think about the past, but as the two cages rolled and bumped along the uneven stone floor, his mind drifted back to two years ago in Puerto Rico. It had all started with a madman’s misguided efforts to study the Lamotelokai by separating its particles. This was stupid on his part—humans weren’t capable of truly understanding the Lamo.

Bobby now knew that the Lamo’s particles functioned correctly only when the Lamo’s consciousness was intact, which required a minimum number of the particles to be joined together, or at least be close to each other. Separating them was a really, really bad idea.

Horrific sights came back to him as clearly as if he’d witnessed them only yesterday. People screaming, collapsing, transforming into unimaginable creatures with different body parts from any number of the animals the Lamo had encountered during its six hundred million years on Earth. The creatures capable of walking or running attacked more people, spreading the transformations like an instant plague to dozens of people, then hundreds, then thousands, and finally, millions. Most of the remaining Puerto Ricans who had managed to avoid contact with the horde were incinerated when military jets firebombed the entire island in an effort to stop the plague from spreading worldwide.

Bobby had considered having the Lamo wipe these hideous memories from his consciousness, but he needed to always have the reminder of just how dangerous the Lamotelokhai could be—how dangerous he could be.

Tears were welling up in his eyes from the painful memories, so he quickly reabsorbed them, but not before Ashley noticed.

She spoke just loud enough to be heard above the noise of hundreds of cats and dogs. “You okay?”

He nodded, then he leaned in close to her ear. “The Lamo doesn’t think it’s possible these people could do anything like what happened in Puerto Rico. They might believe they can, but they can’t.”

As he pulled back, she nodded but also gave him a doubtful look.

The barking and growling grew to an almost unbearable level as Jamie pulled the two cages around a corner and into a brightly lit room at least twice the size of the one they had just come from. Even more cages were in this space, arranged in rows on the floor, but these cages contained the dogs, cats, and other animals the residents had been told to bring. They were making a deafening ruckus.

RJ stood in the middle of the room, watching, as several men and women directed those people still entering with pets toward the remaining empty cages. The four women in military vests were just now wheeling the flat cart out, presumably to get another load of cages.

Jamie crouched on his heels beside Bobby and Ashley’s cage. He glanced in at them and shouted, “This is where the magic will happen.”

Bobby’s eyes were drawn to three men standing next to a small cart. Two of them appeared to be preparing food by mixing handfuls of ingredients from several stainless steel pans atop the cart.
