I try to create that atmosphere at Clif Bar. I ask myself, “Why can’t a business be like that? Why can’t one reason that you come to work be that you really like the people—you enjoy working, being together, and learning from each other?” At Sierra Treks the right mix of people was central; the same is true for Clif Bar. Skills are important, of course, but just as at Treks, at Clif Bar, people are hired for their skills and for who they are. At Sierra Treks, I had climbing skills but I worked alongside academics, yet I never felt intimidated by anyone. We shared each other’s strengths and learned from each other. The same is true at Clif; people value their colleagues’ many talents. The diversity of people at Clif Bar has created an eclectic, creative atmosphere.

Clif Bar makes recreating together available, but not forced. Recreating together may include a rock-climbing weekend, working with Habitat for Humanity, or ski trips. People at Clif Bar climb together, sail together, ride bikes together. Sometimes this occurs through a company event, but most of the time it happens informally. People amaze me by volunteering for Clif events. For example, when we cook a dinner in our commercial kitchen for the sales team, ten people may volunteer just so they can hang out and cook together.

Every day I witness Clif people enjoying and learning from each other. They believe in what they are doing and respect each other—a powerful combination.
