For the most part, we fall back to silence while we work. My mind keeps wondering and somehow, every thought leads back to Inky. Who am I and why did I lock away that part of me and what will happen when I finally unleash her? The person in the woods; who is that? I haven’t gotten a chance to explore all of my mind. There could be so many parts of me scattered. How will I know when I’m complete?

An hour later, we hear people coming in and settling down. Some even come into the kitchen to see what we need help with, but by that point, everything is cooked and breads are on a rack cooling next to the pecan pies. It’s a feast for a small community meeting.

Dahteste thanks us for our help and tells us to find seats, that we’ll bring out the food once the meeting is over, which should only last a half hour or so. Couples and families have already taken half the seats. I spot Desmond and a swath of seats around him. It appears no one wanted to be around the outsider. We join him and I swear he has a small hint of a smile.

“Have fun tossing around tables and chairs?” I whisper to him.

He grunts.

“Thought so. These people are really nice. Suspicious of outsiders, but genuinely good people. I hope they join our cause. Become a Misfit.”

At that, he snorts and shakes his head.

“One of these days, I’m going to get you to talk. One of these days.”

He rolls his eyes.

“Willow, do you think Mister Merrill is going to speak, or you?” Bell asks.

“I’m not sure. We’ll have to see how this plays out. It might even be best if Eve talks.”

I whip my head around at that. “What now?”

Agatha nods, then says, “We’ll see what happens, but we might need both of you to speak if Mister Merrill doesn’t.”

“Why me?” I wonder.

“’Cause you stir something in people. Don’t know what it is, but you make them think,” Annabel says.

More and more people arrive, filling in all the empty chairs until there are only three left. Mister Merrill comes in, flashes us a smile, and sits down with his brother, leaving us to guess if he’s going to say something or not.

A burly man stands and looks around the room. He smiles as his gaze moves across the room until he gets to us. He stops for a moment, shrugs, then turns around until he’s back in the middle of the room in the speaking space.

“Good evening. It’s wonderful to see everyone here tonight. I’d like to introduce and welcome our guests who helped prepare tonight’s meal. My name is Markus. Welcome to our community.” He waves at us and Mister Merrill.

We say hello to the crowd from our seats.

Heads turn to look at us. A preteen with blond hair stands. “Mom and Dad, isn’t that the people who rescued us?”

More heads turn. The boy and his family stare at us with their jaws dropped.
