KIDS OFTEN REACT VERY EMOTIONALLY TO LOSING AND CAN have a hard time accepting it. For instance, my good friend’s ten-year-old son just hates to lose. Every time he loses, he melts down. It’s great that he competes so hard to win, but it’s hard to stand by and watch him lose control of his emotions. Unfortunately, you can’t put an on–off switch on a kid like that and just flip it, saying, “Don’t feel like that!” It’s okay if a kid cries when he loses — it shows that he has passion for the game and cares about the outcome — but it’s not okay for a kid to throw a tantrum. As a coach or parent, it’s your responsibility to teach him to deal with the emotional ups and downs of sports.

Most kids will wake up the day after a bad loss and it’s as though it never happened. But at the heartbreaking moment, it’s hard for a parent to watch. Pay attention, parents, because that difficult moment is the teaching moment, not the next day when the kid has put it behind him. Immediately after the game, when the disappointment is still fresh, talk with your kid about winning and losing and new opportunities ahead. Ask, “What are you feeling? Why are you feeling like that?” Congratulate him for having such passion. Encourage him to maintain his composure. Help him to see that, whether a win or a loss, every game is an opportunity for learning and improvement.
