Dawn broke as they approached the oasis. Though it was still some distance away, it wasn’t as Kekka remembered. There were new caves to one side of it—tall and rounded.

“Binita, are those dragonfly caves?”

“Yes. Blue dragonflies.”

Though Kekka was glad for Binita’s sake, she worried. The dragonfly people might have eaten all the food. Or worse, they’d throw fire and drive Kekka away. Even if she reached the next oasis, the scorplings wouldn’t make it without a proper meal.

A group of dragonfly people left the oasis and headed towards them. As they got closer, Kekka saw more to worry about. They were covered in tough shells and carrying fire-throwers.

“I walk,” said Binita, as she moved in front.

Kekka slowed her pace so Binita would reach them first. The group surrounded Binita. One grabbed her briefly, though she didn’t seem alarmed.

Binita talked and looked back at Kekka.

By the time Kekka reached them, the dragonfly people were guarded, but not immediately hostile. Their fire-throwers were lowered. Kekka picked out some of their conversation. The people spoke of danger. Binita of safe and friend. They spoke much faster than Binita did during the games.

The one who’d grabbed Binita stepped past her and spoke in the same rushed tone.

“Kiki says thanks,” translated Binita.

Kekka raised her tail cautiously.

“Safe Kiki. My Kiki.” In dragonfly she said, Ramesh.

Kekka tapped the ground with a pincer. “It was tradition.”

Binita told Ramesh, She says it was her duty.
