30B. State Capitol, Topeka, Kansas (1994)

This 1994 photograph shows the massive east wing’s columned portico in front of the original east wing of the capitol in Gardner’s view. The quarter-century-long project was the capstone of Haskell’s long productive career as state architect. Legislative offices and the governor’s office overlook the grounds here from the floors above. Standing on the portico is the first woman state representative from Lawrence, Betty Jo Charlton, at the end of her fifteen years of service in the legislature. The second floor of the capitol also houses the famous murals by John Stuart Curry, including that of John Brown in the “Tragic Prelude.”
