CHAPTER 13

“Maybe we should find a place to sleep for the night.” James looked around them. It had been mostly cloudy all day, but even the small hint of the sun was now gone, the night sky blanketed with more clouds and no hint of stars or the moon.

“Right here is good.” Bridget spread her hands, turning in a half-circle. “There’s more food and water than we can take with us. And a partial wall to lean against and keep us out of the weather if another storm comes through.”

“That’s not a bad idea.” James figured it was as good of a place as any. They could grab more food to eat when they got hungry and not dip into the items they were going to take with them. “It could also mean coming into contact with others.”

Bridget arched her eyebrow and plucked a package of Twinkies from a bent-up shelf that had seen better days. “How do you figure?”

“Survivors are going to be looking for food and water, just like we are. If they’re familiar with the area, they’re gonna know where these stores once stood. Not that I’m gonna stand here and fight them off or anything. There’s plenty to go around.” A small part of him wanted to take guard over it and not share. It was plentiful now. It wouldn’t be the same story in just a few days, especially if more people came around.

They sat together against the wall, clearing out a spot free of debris and dust. Bridget waved the package of Twinkies and tore into it, pulling one of the cakes from the plastic. “You’d never see me eating these nasty things under normal circumstances.”

James pried open a can of Vienna sausages. “Same for these.” He pulled out a link covered in oil and gel. “Normally I’d be cringing at that, but my stomach just growled. Want one?” He held the can out toward her. “Twinkies are good, but we need protein, too.”

She slid one from the can and ate it. “They’re not too bad. My son…” she looked away and shook her head.

“Your son?” James didn’t want to pry.

“Yeah. My son used to eat these. One of his favorite snacks in the summertime.”

James ate another link and gulped some water. “I’m sorry, Bridget.”

“Do you have kids?” She finally looked at him again, eyes red as tears gathered in them.

“Just my storm chasers. Never even got married.” He forced a laugh, waiting for the judgmental stare that didn’t come.

“My son is seven.”

“Where was he at when all this started?”

She slid out the second Twinkie but didn’t eat it. “School. Aspen Elementary. He’s a second grader.”

“We need to get to that school. How far is it from here?”

“It’s about a ten-minute drive from where I work. About twenty minutes from our house. There’s a closer school where we live, but I wanted him near where I worked. For safety. For convenience.” She scoffed and slipped the Twinkie back into the package. “A lot of good that did us, right?”

“A ten-minute drive,” James repeated, clicking his tongue.
