I think there’s a time printed underneath that, but I don’t know what the symbols mean.

My stomach clenches tightly and I wonder if I might be sick, right here on the tea table.

“Are you all right, my dear? You have turned pale.” General Froome leans forward and puts a clammy hand to my forehead.

“I’m fine, General. I’m just so excited about the gala. I can’t wait for everyone to see us together. I’m so proud to be your new pet.”

This hits the right note. He smiles happily at me again. “Of course. Girls get so excited about their first big party. You go to your chamber. Take a nap. The groomers will be here to collect you in a while. Grab the opportunity to rest before then.”

I accept his offer graciously and leave the room. Thank God for that.

Once in my room, I close the door and push the nightstand in front of it. It’s a sparse, small space, but it’s mine. He doesn’t come in here. He never has.

Maybe that’ll change once he starts expecting sex from me. Maybe the boundaries will all move again.

I need to get out of here before that happens.

I’m never going to let a man control me again. Not ever.

I’ll play along now, but as soon as I have an opportunity to go, I’m out of here.

I lie on my little bed, wide awake, thinking of Prince Radek. And wondering how in the hell I’m going to stop them killing him.
