“That’s ridiculous,” Simon said, as he paced back and forth across the office.

“It isn’t. It makes sense. Right?” Elizabeth asked, turning toward Charlie, Travers, and Jack.

Jack knew better than to get between two Crosses when they got their blood up. Their “discussion” about who should go where and who shouldn’t had been going for the last twenty minutes. He held up his hands to indicate he was going to remain neutral during this particular battle of the Crosses.

“Charlie?” Elizabeth asked, turning beseechingly to her daughter. “Back me up here.”

Charlie furrowed her brow in thought. “She does have a point, Dad.”

“See?” Elizabeth said gloatingly.

“Buuuut, Dad does too.”

Elizabeth turned on her. “Some help you are.”

Charlie just shrugged, took a quick sip of Jack’s beer, and gave him a sly wink. She was enjoying this.

“You’re missing the point entirely,” Simon said.

“Your point has no point,” Elizabeth countered. “It’s a dot.”

“What on earth does that even mean?”

“If you have to ask …”

“Elizabeth, be serious.”

“I am, and I think—”

“Do you mind if I give you my thoughts?” Travers asked. He’d been very patient, almost too patient. “After all, I am the director.”

Simon looked like he was ready to say something snarky, but Travers had evidently had enough.

“Mr. Cross—please? I realize this is quite personal for all of you. And might I suggest that your closeness to the subject is perhaps clouding your better judgement. If you would just take a seat and let me explain my thoughts?”

Simon looked ready to keep going.

“In other words,” Jack said, “sit down, shut up, and listen.”

“Well …” Travers said, ducking his head a bit demurely.

Elizabeth laughed as she sat down. “Come on, Simon.”

He grunted but sat down. “You were saying?”

“Thank you. I think we all realize the precariousness of our situation and the need to act with alacrity. While I wish there were more operatives available that I trust, there simply are not. The people in this room,” he said, looking from one to the other, “are all that stand between our continued existence and oblivion.”

Travers took a deep breath and continued. “Because we are shorthanded and we have two simultaneous needs, we have no choice but to create two teams.”

“We are aware of that,” Simon said tersely.

“Yes, and considering your desire to keep one of the Charlottes with each of you at all times, a precaution I applaud, the only logical make-up of the parties is as follows. Simon, you and … Charlie,” he said, still tripping over her nickname, “will go to Kathmandu while Elizabeth, Jack, and Charlotte travel to Bombay.”

“Insanity,” Simon said.

“It is the only logical arrangement. You and Elizabeth must be separated in order for each of you to remain with a Charlotte. I think we can all agree that Charlie is far better suited to the potential rigors of Nepal than her young counterpart. And, while I have no doubt that Charlie and Elizabeth can handle themselves in nearly any situation, given the realities and the sexism of the era into which you travel, it seems wise to have a man in each party.
