Chapter 13

THEY DID NOT ACTUALLY go to bed early, but Nicholas still rose with the sun. Moreover, he woke up in a great mood.

Anna continued to sleep like the dead, so he struggled to extricate himself since she had thrown her arms, legs and all of herself over him.

Anna woke up as he was disentangling himself. She must have decided to use him as her alarm clock.

Both of them knew that there was no time to waste. The attack on the village was imminent, while the amount of money collected by the village elder was prohibitively small.

Therefore, the couple heated up the water and the half-eaten rabbit, had a quick breakfast, washed, put on their gear, and went hunting. Nicholas had decided yesterday that there was no point in storing the weapons in the warehouse. No outsider could get into this house anyway.

“Nicholas,” Yaroslav approached him as soon as he stepped outside. The burly head hunter held out his shovel-like hand and Nicholas saw no reason not to shake it.

Nicholas privately noted that, despite the difference in size, his hand was noticeably stronger than the hunter’s massive hand. Yaroslav noticed it too and nodded to himself.

“I’d like your help. Konstantin and his group,” he pointed towards the square where the merchants and artisans were located, “need trees to start creating weapons. A lot of trees.”

“But you gathered plenty of wood yesterday. Why not repeat the feat today?” Nicholas inquired. “We must collect enough coins by nightfall, so everyone needs to go hunting today.”

“Yes, we did, and even made shields out of sticks and rabbit skins!” The big man smiled. “But it’s not enough… It’ll be much easier with your help. I’ve seen you hunt, so I know what I’m talking about. We’ll be able to hunt much more effectively with this equipment.”

‘True, it’ll be much easier if they make shields and weapons. We’re also more likely to repel the attack. Perhaps I can even get one of these shields. I’m sure it’ll be very useful against the squirrels.’

The hunter waited patiently as Nicholas thought it over. Anna studied the hunter’s clothes with interest. He wore only pants, but they were made of several layers of rabbit skin. The shoes, on the other hand, were from the store, just like Nick’s.

“I agree. Meet me at the gate in ten minutes and have a shield ready for me.”

“Ha, I knew what you’d ask for. It’s ready and waiting for you, and between you and me, it’s the best one of the lot,” Yaroslav smiled and shook Nick’s hand before leaving. The couple proceeded to the warehouse, where Anna gave Nicholas the money from her account. They had a total of 171 coins.

Using the time he still had, Nicholas bought a spare spear from NPC Greg and sent it straight to the warehouse. Only then did he head for the village exit.

Although the operation was scheduled for ten minutes hence, a crowd had already gathered and was loudly discussing the upcoming task. People were agreeing in advance about who was covering whom and who would do what.
