millicent took a sip of wine and swilled it around in her mouth.

“You really did kill it yesterday,” Bryce repeated.

She smiled into her glass. “What about your story about the shortage of pork at the grocery stores? You deserve some praise for that too.”

Bryce popped a cracker into his mouth and spoke with his mouth full.

“Someone call the Pulitzer committee!” he said.

“What was the headline? ‘Nobody’s Bringing Home the Bacon’? I mean, it’s one of Franc’s finest, you have to admit.”

Bryce laughed. Sophie rolled her eyes dramatically.

“But really, Franc did like your story,” Bryce said. “He always says the problem with reporters is they work so fast they forget they have a soul, and it leaves the writing flat.”

“You’re saying Franc thinks I have a soul?” Millicent kept her eyes on her wineglass to hide her pride. “I’m so honoured,” she said.

“You should be. Franc doesn’t give out compliments—”

“Millicent is a brilliant writer. I’ve always told her so,” Sophie interrupted. “But now we know she’s a brilliant reporter too. Charlie called her out on some serious colonialist issues that still exist within our community, and she listened, took it in stride and wrote something for the paper that like, actually really matters.”

Sophie’s lips were already plum coloured from the wine. She seemed pleased the spotlight was on her now. Sensing this, Bryce turned to her and gave her his full attention.

“You’re volunteering for Charlie’s campaign team. What do you think’s going to happen with all of this?”

“What do I think?” Sophie asked, sitting up straighter. “I think if Jakowsky starts fucking with the Vista, the Gwich’in will make his life very, very ugly.”

Bryce frowned. “I don’t know. If Jakowsky gets re-elected, first thing he does is break ground, and he’ll move so fast nobody will have time to stop him. You don’t think they’ve been planning this for years?”

“Maybe,” Sophie said. “But if he does go ahead with this beast of a gold mine that no one wants, he’s going to get one hell of a fight. Honestly, Bryce? I wouldn’t be surprised if the Gwich’in take him to court for lack of consultation.”

Bryce shook his head. “Trust me, some people do want this mine. Many people do. We have to get out of our siloed way of thinking.”

Millicent, worried about Pascal, was distracted. She gazed out the kitchen window into the night, waiting for the sound of his diesel engine or the sight of the bus’s headlights. It had been storming all day and there must have been at least two feet of new snow on the ground. Maybe the bus had got stuck. Millicent checked her phone for new messages, then forced her attention back to the table.

“What if Jakowsky doesn’t win?” she asked.

Sophie downed her wine and held her glass up for emphasis. “Exactly!”

The conversation continued with hypotheticals until Pascal finally arrived, bursting into the apartment without knocking. His pants were covered with grease stains and his beard seemed to have greyed overnight. He stomped snow from his boots and placed them neatly on the floor.
