Sam led her to a quiet room, shutting the door as Maya looked around the sparsely lit area. His footsteps sounded loud on the dark wooden floor as he went over to one of the many blood-red lounge chairs situated through the room in various semi-circles. Along the left wall was a long black granite island counter lined with metal stools. Dozens of multi-colored glass bottles overwhelmed the wall shelves behind it.

“What is all of that for?” she inquired, motioning toward the full-service bar.

“Something to do as a pastime or for when things become too difficult to bear,” he replied, beckoning her to sit across from him. He waited until she was seated before continuing. “Do you know the story of how Zephon came to be?”

“Of course. Everyone within Hesediel knows it.”

Sam leaned back into his seat with a sigh. “Most of that is a lie.”

“I guessed as much,” she replied nonchalantly, meeting his surprised gaze. “Obviously it can’t be true if I’m sitting here talking to you instead of being held in a cold cell somewhere.”

“You’re not like other Archeins.”

“I could say the same, but you are among the first Zephs I’ve met so far. Enough distractions and back to my question,” Maya scolded impatiently.

He smirked. “Raziel was one of the Archeins who turned against the Archangels in the beginning.”

Maya stared in stunned silence for a moment as she gathered her thoughts. Her guardian angel was even older than she had originally thought.

“If that’s true, how did he escape First-Tier punishment?”

“It was agreed he would turn over a handful of them in order to remain in Hesediel as a spy.”

“Out of all the others, why him?”

“He was slated to be a guardian. He could privately train the next soldiers for the downfall of the Archangels and they would never suspect him. With this turn of events, he has probably already been given eternal imprisonment,” Sam grimly concluded.

“There must be a way to retrieve the souls.”

“If there is, no one has found out how. The only two people likely to know would be Aelas and the Reaper. So you see our dilemma.”

“We’ll need to capture all of the Archangels then. Perhaps the Reaper will make an appearance if we upset the balance enough.”

She watched as the blood drained from Sam’s face, his grey eyes wide in disbelief as he looked her over.

“That would be a death sentence.”

“The mere fact Zephon exists is the same thing.”

Sam slowly shook his head, leaning forward to rest his forearms on his knees. “You don’t understand. Upsetting the balance will only cause the Reaper to recycle everyone except the Archangels back to Earth.”

Maya scoffed. “What right has the Reaper to do that?” She saw Sam’s shocked reaction and quickly spoke again. “That was a rhetorical question. I know it holds control over all dimensions.”

“I was hoping,” he stated, followed by a nervous laugh. “You can’t always be certain what information the Archangels give out. We have had several come here thinking they truly saw a loved one after they died.
