ZEN

After we made a quick detour and went home to change, we sat in the booth in a diner in Mount Seaward. There was no need, I felt, to hide away when the Strigoi basically knew our every move and could no longer threaten me with anything now that I had the dagger in my possession.

I dialled the number and waited. And waited. And waited.

A computerised voice came on indicating that my coordinates had been saved and someone would be with me shortly. I didn’t recognise the voice, and truth be told, I was rather surprised that the call actually registered after all this time.

“How will we know when they turn up?” I asked, nervous to find out who this connection to my parents was.

“I’m sure they’ll know who you are,” Jonah surmised, giving my fidgety hands a quick squeeze. I looked down at my hands in his.

“I’ve been unfair to you,” I told him, by way of an apology. “You’ve been doggedly protecting me for the past year, and I doubted your loyalty to me.”

Paris came back from making a call outside the diner, his eyes settling suspiciously on our intertwined hands. “Geez, can’t leave you kids alone for a minute without you jumping each other’s bones,” he said, and although he said it jokingly, I could see the sight upset him, although I didn’t quite understand why. I pulled my hands away and set them by my side, using the waitress’s appearance as an excuse.

“It’s been a while,” I noted, after we finished eating. “I don’t think whoever’s supposed to be here is coming.”

“Patience,” Paris said, settling back like he had all the time in the world.

Another 40 minutes passed, with patrons walking in and out of the store, when I felt a jolt run through me as the front door jingled again. I looked up as a man…Professor Jackson?…walked through the door of the diner, looking around the room until he spotted an empty table. It could’ve been an innocent coincidence, but why would a course of energy surge through me otherwise?

“Xenisa?” Professor Jackson stopped by our table and greeted me on the way to his own table. “You’ve missed a couple of classes this week.”

“I was out of town-just got back,” I explained, which technically wasn’t a lie.

“Well, I hope to see you in class tomorrow,” he said, nodding before turning to walk away.

“Mr Jackson. Professor,” Paris lifted a finger in his direction and interrupted Professor Jackson’s departure. “Why don’t you join us?”

“I’m meeting someone,” Professor Jackson said, looking around curiously.

“I understand,” Paris said, nodding. “Why don’t you join us anyway? At least until your party arrives?”

I looked at Paris and frowned, tapping into his thoughts. I couldn’t believe he actually believed that Professor Jackson was the contact we had called earlier. Professor Jackson? Mild mannered, soft spoken Professor Jackson? What help could he possibly be to us?
