“I can’t heal her. The death magic in her blood is too potent. I don’t know what to do.”
My mother was trying to whisper, I think, but she was doing a shit job of it. Granted, we were riding on the back of a water dragon, so it wasn’t like there was a lot of real estate to have a private conversation. Well, there was, just not too much above water.
I peeled an eye open, my head rocking a solid eight-point-oh on the Richter scale. Dear sweet mother of all that was holy, why did I feel like I’d been run over by a truck? Oh, right, because my grandmother poured death magic into me like a nut job.
“I can hear you,” I groaned, realizing belatedly that I was in Alistair’s arms as he kept us firmly fastened to Zillah. I studied what he was holding onto and realized someone somehow must have conjured a harness of some kind so we didn’t get pitched overboard. “I don’t think that magic agrees with me. Let’s never use it again, mm-kay?”
“No bloody shit, love. You stopped breathing there for a minute. I am decidedly not a fan.” Alistair’s face was haggard with worry, the dirt and blood and fear carving deep grooves into his skin. His nose wasn’t swollen anymore, so at least he was healing.
I… wasn’t. That couldn’t be good.
My mind was as fuzzy as cotton candy—only way less nice—and I hurt all over. Yep. Not good at all.
“Is that why my chest feels like someone sat on it?” I asked because it did. It felt way worse than that, actually. My actual heart hurt, like every beat was a struggle, like someone had a fist around it and was squeezing with all their might.
“Your chest feels like that because I am a first-rate asshole and didn’t realize what my magic would do to you.” My gaze zeroed in on Lilith, who appeared like she was on death’s door. I had a feeling I looked about the same. “I thought that if I pushed my magic through you, with as much power as you had, it would strengthen both sides of the coin. I didn’t know that it would attack you, too.”
Wait. This was Lilith’s power? And my body was rejecting it.
“Take it back. If giving it to me caused this, then take it back.” It seemed only logical to me. Uncertainty rose in my gut as I watched Lilith’s expression morph from sorrow to abject fear.
“I tried,” she whispered. “It won’t come back to me even though I called for it.”
“So, we’re just giving up then?” I scolded her, which in hindsight might not have been the best thing, but whatever. If I was about to kick the bucket, then I was going to be as salty as I wanted to be. “You tried once, and even though this poison in my veins is burning me from the inside out, you’re ready to throw in the fucking towel? How about, fuck that?”
I wanted to quit, too, but did she see me doing that? No.
