His bloody wife was a warrior.

Varan had always known she was deep down, but seeing it was something else. Now here she was, wearing armor and weapons like she’d been born to this warrior’s life.

“If anyone needs me, please contact Nadyah first. I need to speak to my people,” Adelina said. She left headquarters without bowing.

Adelina was a queen now. She waited for no one to dismiss her.

He growled at the strangers in the room, his instincts still had him on the killing edge. Varan wanted to rip anything and anyone to shreds who even remotely looked like a threat. It had been like that since he’d received the cast from her detailing what had happened on Anarr.

Varan blamed no one. It had been a bit of bad luck and timing, but he wanted to hunt down whoever it was who had tipped off the Neprijat and take his justice in flesh and bone.

But Adelina needed him more.

They stalked through the Royal Eyrie and Varan stayed slightly behind so he could guard her back and study her at the same time.

Varan had seen glimpses of this Adelina. He’d known it was there, and had been trying to show it to the public little by little so when it finally did happen it wouldn’t be such a shock to the people. But if he were honest with himself he didn’t think it would happen for cycles.

Then she’d had to fight for her life.

His hands clenched into fists and Varan saw red.

“My love,” Adelina snapped. “Your snarling is frightening our allies.”

They were on the floor they’d been assigned when they’d first arrived and he couldn’t even remember walking there.

Indeed, Drakesthai were eyeing him as they made a wide berth. Varan hadn’t even noticed he was doing it.

Adelina placed her hand on the door and the three of them entered the luxurious living space they’d been assigned. The second that door closed behind them Varan whirled on Adelina. “Are you hurt? What about the bastard who ratted us out? Can I take his eyes?”

She took the crown off her head and tossed it on the couch. “You can take their eyes and whatever else you want. Kaiden’s warriors will deliver them to us once they’re found.”

“Are you hurt,” Varan demanded, glancing at Kaiden – who had been carefully quiet ever since the two of them had arrived.

“There were cuts from the monster’s talons, but they were quickly healed after the fight,” Adelina admitted, crossing her arms over her armored chest. “You have nothing to say of my performance?”

It took him two seconds to cross the room and find the seam where her armor was sealed. A flick of a finger and the panels fell off to reveal unmarred skin after recognizing his DNA – except for the new scar on her forearm next to the one she’d received during their wedding ceremony.

Varan grinned, feeling a bit more settled at the sight of the proof she was all right. “Darling, you were wonderful.
