The Chore of Getting Kids to Do Chores

As if homework isn’t hard enough to stay on top of, how about your child’s chores? No one likes to do chores, and moms with ADHD avoid going head to head with their children like the plague. It’s simply too exhausting. Consider handing this over to your partner if possible. However, as parents, decide as a team who should do what chores, taking into consideration input from your child. Here are some tips to help lighten the burden.

A Spoonful of Sugar…

Try finding fun ways for your child to do her chores. Rewards work well, though if your child has ADHD, they need to be given immediately. Try writing down chores on small pieces of paper, folding them in half, and tossing them in a bowl or jar. Make it a game to see what task your child will draw. In another bowl, have rewards written down that your child gets to pull out after she completes her chore. Rewards can be an extra hour of TV or computer time, a special outing with a parent, and so on.
